Cataracts Awareness Month

Submitted by Shane on

Cataracts are one of the most common age-related vision issues. Although cataracts are typically unavoidable and unpreventable, there are several steps you can take to promote healthy eyesight. We thought that because August is Cataracts Awareness Month, we would share the following tips with you:

  1. Reduce Your Risk of Diabetes: Diabetes is a well-known risk factor for the development of cataracts. Reduce the risk of developing diabetes by eating a healthy, well-balanced diet and by maintaining an active lifestyle. If you currently have diabetes, it is vital that you manage your condition with a healthy diet, exercise, and prescribed medical treatment.
  2. Quit Smoking: When eyes are constantly exposed to smoke, your lenses can be significantly damaged. Smoking not only contributes to the development of cataracts but also damages the eyesight of those around you.
  3. Wear Safety Goggles: If you work in an environment in which airborne pollutants are common, it is in your best interest to wear safety goggles. Just like with cigarette smoke, the consistent exposure to airborne contaminants can damage the lenses and contribute to cataract development.
  4. Avoid Excessive Exposure to Sunlight: Overexposure to sunlight can also cause significant damage to a person’s eyesight. To prevent this from happening, wear sunglasses as often as possible—not just on sunny days.
  5. Avoid Harmful Medications, When Possible: Certain drugs, including prescription steroids, increase the risk of developing cataracts. If you are concerned about how your medications are affecting your vision, schedule an appointment to speak with your doctor. If possible avoid harmful medications or reduce the amount that you are taking. Please note that you should always consult a medical professional before discontinuing or changing medical treatments.

Fortunately, if you develop cataracts, there are effective treatments that can be used to correct your vision. However, by following these five tips, you can maintain healthy eyesight and can protect your eyes from unnecessary damage.
