SSI just isn't enough

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on

Im sure I'm not the only person in this position. I don't qualify for SSDI so I'm on SSI. I have Cystic Fibrosis, diabetes, epilepsy, mild scoliosis, and kidney disease. Is there any other kind of assistance I can apply for? I know I can work a little, which I have but I get sick and have to quit or miss work. I'm just really depressed about my situation.

Hi there,
You may want to contact your local SSA office, they may be able to direct you to some state-run programs in where you live.

Most people I know in your situation are trying to do some things on the side from home at their own pace to make some extra money. Do you garden at all (farmers markets with share booths are fun and profitable)? Or can you sell on EBay or local Craigslist (most thrift stores throw away a lot of seasonal items you may be able to pick up and sell)? What kind of work did you do before and how can you use those skills now to help others (with paperwork or do billing from home for small businesses or fix a computer or even a wood drawer? People all over are looking for someone who can DO something. Shoe repairs, hemming/alterations, running errands, etc.).

This is America and whatever you think you can do, you CAN!

All of the money you make has to be reported to Social Security. Advising a person to make money on the side is irresponsible, in my opinion, if you don't spell it out that the income must be reported. Many people who receive SSI do work and have income and still qualify for SSI. But you can only have a modest amount of income and continue to receive benefits.

I understand I am not supposed to have more than $2000 in my account, but what if I have a secured credit card with say $1000 in it. Will S.S. find out?

Hi everyone...I am a disabled female from Simpsonville SC I have been on disability since 2016 due to diabetes, depression, and strokes. I was only awarded $361 a month. I am married and was told it is because my spouse was working at the time and earning $15 an hour. He was awarded disability last year and he no longer earns his wages. He gets $1641 a month. So, together we get $2000 a month, which doesn't come close to meeting our living needs. Any info for this case is welcome.

Hi Lisa,

I am sorry to hear that. Your household income should not have an affect on the amount of your disability payments. Without all of the details I cannot be sure how your payment amounts were determined. I would recommend calling your local SSA office and they will be able to look at all of the documentation you have and give a little more information.
