Depression, chronic pain and with crutches. "Accident" happened outside of US.

I was unsure whether to post this in the "Do You Qualify" forum or the "How To Apply" forum.

I am a citizen of the United States but currently in Argentina. A year and 4 months ago, due to non-diagnosed depression, I attempted to throw myself off of a building. I broke lumbar L1 and L2 (two bones in my spine). I spent 5 months in the public hospital here in Argentina and eventually had two surgeries to get a prosthesis put in.

I have been recovering for the last 11 months, and I have gone from a wheelchair to crutches. It doesn't seem like I will be able to walk without crutches at any point soon.

I did online work for a company after the incident for some months however due to my severe depression and excruciating pain I was unable to keep the job for very long.

I am constantly in pain (neuropathic pain) and am unable to stand for extended periods of times.

I feel completely unable to function due to my mental and physical problems.

I have two questions.

- Would I qualify for disability?

- How would I go about applying for disability when my medical record, history, doctors, psychologists/psychiatrists, etc... are all here in Argentina?

I am willing to go to the states to do the process.

Hi there,
I really could not say if you were eligible because we are not affiliated with the SSA or the federal government and cannot make that assessment. You may want to call the SSA at 1-800-772-1213 for more information that would be specific to your case.
