Doctor says I need to see a 'disability doctor' to get SSI

Hi there,

I am writing for my sister, who has severe depression and OCD. She has loans from school that have come due and she is trying to get her doctor to sign off on delaying her loans. Unfortunately, the doctor has been difficult with her and will not sign off completely and has told her that she needs to see a 'disability doctor' in order to get her loans either cancelled or delayed.

The doctor she is seeing is a regular psychiatrist in the Cooper health system... so she's confused as to what to do. Where do you find a 'disability doctor'? I've done some preliminary searches and have found the term 'Social Security Claims Doctor'... but when I search for local ones, I can't find any.

Thanks for any advice

Hi there,
If your sister is seeking a discharge of her student loans due to disability, she may need to apply for and be approved for Social Security Disability or Supplemental Security income, either of which may require being assessed by a third-party, independent doctor.
