Iowa Handicap Parking

Are you eligible for Handicap Parking Plates and Placards in Iowa?

A licensed medical professional has to verify your impaired mobility and eligibility requirements in writing. Details that differ from the general eligibility guidelines include:

  • You can’t walk 200 feet without rest
  • You have severe lung disease, with forced expiratory volume for 1 second, when measured by spirometry, is less than 1 liter
  • You are extremely limited in mobility because of an arthritic, neurological or orthopedic condition

Organizations that provide transportation to disabled individuals may also apply for disability parking privileges.

If someone visits Iowa from another state and possess handicap privileges from said state, he or she will be able to park in handicap parking spaces.

What is the Iowa application process for Disability Parking Plates, Placards and Stickers?

You can get the Application for Persons with Disability Parking Permit for Iowa Residents (Form 411055) by going to your nearest County Treasurer’s Office or printing the document online.>

You will need to obtain and provide a medical statement from your physician, chiropractor, physician’s assistant or nurse practitioner on letterhead stationary stating your mobile impairment.

Once you obtain your medical statement and finish the application, you can bring it in to your nearest Iowa Office of Vehicle Services or mail it to:

  • Office of Vehicle Services
    Iowa Department of Transportation
    PO Box 9278
    Des Moines, Iowa 50306-9278

If you’re applying for disability stickers, you will have to visit an Office of Vehicle Services. If you would like to obtain disability license plates, they are available at a County Treasurer’s Office.

How long are Handicap Parking Plates and Placards Valid in Iowa?

Depending on if you possess a plate, placard or sticker, the validity of the disability access varies.

  • Plate:
    • Valid for one year with self-certification of vehicle owner or child
  • Windshield Placard:
    • Temporary placards are valid for 6 months, or unless otherwise specified by doctor
    • Permanent placards don’t expire
  • Sticker:
    • Valid for as long as vehicle registration is current

Iowa disability plates just need to be renewed by the expiration date listed and require no fee.

Are there Iowa Disabled Veteran Plates?

Disabled Veteran Plates are available for any Iowa resident veteran that has been provided a vehicle by the United States government under provisions of Sections 1901 and 1903, Title 38 of US Code.

Once you receive the certification, you can submit it to the County Treasurer’s Office, where you reside and the vehicle was registered. The office will notify you when the plates are ready.

Your current plates will need to be exchanged for the new plates once they are ready for use.

After experiencing the benefits of the Iowa Disabled Veteran License Plate, you need to renew the plate by the expiration date. Similarly, you can appreciate the benefits of Social Security Disability after filing a claim.

Can I report Handicap Parking Abuse?

Unfortunately, there are instances where individuals who aren’t eligible for handicap parking and don’t have a mobility impairment misuse handicap parking spaces, plates, and placards.

If an individual parks in a handicap parking space and is able to walk freely without struggle to a destination, there’s a chance they shouldn’t have be parking there.

Parking in handicap parking spaces without the proper license plate, placard or sticker may result in a $200 fine.

In addition, failure to return removable placards, stickers or plates after expiration could also result in a fine up to $200. As well as providing false information on your initial application, you could receive a civil fine of $300 and your disability parking eligibility could be withdrawn.

You can report handicap parking abuse by filing a police report and notifying you’re the Iowa Department of Transportation immediately.
