Qualifying children

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on

I have children and their father has recently went for a hearing is waiting on a decision. I was told that the kids will qualify for benefits. I have several questions.
How is the amount determined?
What are the rules for the cutoff age to recieve benefits?
Do the children recieve back pay as well?
What steps if any do I need to take to set up their case?
If a child is 18 but still in high school do they qualify, and for how long?

Me and my ex are not legally separated yet and he applied and for approved for disability. I was told by his dad that me and our daughter might be approved too. I have got nothing from them. I don't know if we are approved to get any money or not. How do I find out?

Hi there,
You may want to contact your local SSA office regarding this, they can give you detailed information about your eligibility and if you were awarded benefits.

I have ssdi through my parents. Now I have a newborn. Why can't I add my son on my disability.... ? And because of this I can't receive housing help or even any assistance with my newborn because I receive to much money.

Hi Sara,
Your child may not be considered disabled by the SSA, and as such your child would not be eligible for benefits.

Hello. I applied for ssdi for my son when he was 8. He was diagnosed with ADHD and a learning disability at the time. I did not know then that I should have applied again. He is now 15 years old and has been diagnosed with Autism and ADHD. I will be applying again soon. I wanted to know, is there any chance that I will receive back pay or has too much time passed since my initial application?

Hi. My 4 y/o has been receiving SSDI since 2015 due to his father disability. We have been separated and now one of the parents is requesting paternity test. What if the father is not the biological father? Is the other parent going to be in trouble with social security? Is the child going to stop receiving the benefit?

Hi there,
If the father had acknowledged that they are the father of the child, the paternity test may not make the child ineligible. You may want to consult your state's laws regarding paternity.

Hi there,
You may not be eligible for benefits if they are receiving income-based SSI benefits.

Hi Lee,
She may be able to receive benefits based on your work record, however you may need to wait a year after adoption before she becomes eligible.
