Starting Work - What do I need to Know?

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on

I've been getting SSI since I was 18 back in 2010 because of a severe problem I'm just now starting to overcome. I decided to start looking for jobs because I did spend the years learning stuff on my own that I'd like to do and because the amount of SSI is barely enough for food after my bills are paid. I have to budget $3/day for food which is hard where I am when a single apple itself is almost $2! I just cannot do it anymore, it's not healthy for me. So I'm forcing myself to work and better myself as I go.

I found a company in web development that's willing to work with me to help me get into the work field and gain experience I would need to move into better positions. The pay is above the SSI limit for monthly income so I know for a fact I would be cut off.

So I have a few questions:

1. Will I have to repay anything back for the month I started working and got paid the SSI?

2. Will I be able to continue my health care coverage or will I have to go through obamacare?

Hi there,
Generally, you would only need to pay the SSA back for an overpayment, I would contact them to let them know you are starting to work. If you've got health care coverage through Medicaid, your eligibility will depend on the criteria of the state that you live in as that is a state run program.
