Can you voluntarily switch from SSDI to SSI?

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on

Supporting a disabled mom with three children under 18. She was receiving SSI, was switched to SSDI under her father's work history. It would be in the family's best interest financially if they were receiving SSI. Can they choose to switch from SSDI to SSI?

Hi there,
While you may be able to receive both at the same time, the SSA would not allow to people to switch benefits at will.

I'm no expert but from my constant search for info over the past 3 yrs. waiting, my input would be that most times ssd is more than ssi would be. if your ssd is lower than your ssi would be then you can apply for ssi and the additional amount would be paid on top of the ssd. I would call ssa and ask as they do seem to be knowledgeable on these issues. they don't get any work done but they seem able to answer about 50% of questions!!!

Hi Ray,
Thanks for sharing! It's true that you can receive SSDI and SSI benefits if your SSDI amount is less than the SSI maximum of $735 a month in 2017.
