When I initially met with my attorney, I was told that back pay would go back one year from application, minus 5 months (I had already waited over 2 years to file because I was told I would have "full recovery" after my 2 fusion surgeries). I've received my acceptance letter but not my back pay yet, and during my search for more info on the process I came across a SSDI page stating that even if it takes 24 months for your claim to get approved, you can only receive pay for 12 months. Can anybody help clarify this for me please? Also, I have friends who received their back pay before or immediately after their approval letters (NY), but I've seen posts by people saying it took several months so I was wondering if there was a formula for when I can expect mine? I'm not looking to go on a spending spree, but I have a mortgage, car payment, property and school taxes, and children to feed and clothe as well as one in an expensive college. Hi! I had a favorable ALJ decision for SSI/SSDI in May (2017) I received a letter from SSA explaining that the can pay benefits for February 2014 through May 2017. My back pay that I calculated was $47,000.00 but I received a check for $20,668.49 today in the mail. SSA says they compared my SSI and SSDI benefits and should have paid me $21,315.51 less in SSI benefits and they are withholding the amount from my SSDI benefits. What does this mean? That the back pay amount is not $47K? I never received a penny until today...so does this mean that I've somehow lost $21K in back pay? If so, why? Why do they compare SSI to SSDI benefits? Help, my head is exploding. Thanks!

Hi Scott,
The SSA may issue SSI benefits for people who are in the process of applying for SSDI. In this case, they may consider the SSI benefits paid prior to the award as part of the back pay. If you didn't receive SSI benefits in this manner, you may want to contact them as someone may be using your identity.
My husband filed for SSI/SSDI back in 1998, was denied because he went to college. Recently, he had to reopen his old case from 1998 due to added issues pertaining to old injuries and new ones, and we pray that this will go through for him this time. Would it be possible for him to get back pay from that far back? Just curious...

I applied for Disability in March 2013, turned down twice, and finally had a hearing January 2017. The ALJ found me to be fully disabled beginning March 2013. I started receiving monthly SSDI benefits February 2017. I was called and told my disability back pay was being processed and it would include the months September 2013-January 2017. Its now June and back pay has not been released. I've been to the local SS office, tried calling...and calling...and calling my case worker who has not answered or returned my calls, and have called Baltimore several times and nobody can give me an explanation as to why back pay has not been released yet. Is there anything else I can do?

Hi Perry,
It seems like you were awarded SSI benefits rather than SSDI benefits. SSDI benefits start five months after you've been awarded benefits, and SSI benefits start the month after you have been awarded benefits. Back pay for SSI is payed in three installments over six month periods, with the first two being a maximum of $2000.
You may want to confirm this information with the SSA, as they would have specific information about your particular case.
I am currently awaiting back pay. Injury 4-13-2013. ALJ decision granted full disability as well as back pay to 4.2013 on 2.3.17. Receiving monthly payment as of march 2017. As of today it has been 21 weeks and I still do not have my back pay. Congressman office contacted two weeks ago. Exactly what in the world is the issue with SSDI backlog that they cannot do their job.

I am sorry to hear that. Unfortunately it can be a long process though. Having your representative's office look into the matter could help resolve this sooner though.

That's a interesting predicament! You may have had your hearings postponed for various reasons.
I've been on SSI for 13 years they recently called me into the SS office and told me since I was disabled before age 22 I should of been getting money from my deceased father who died 16 years ago. They said my check will now double and now instead of being on SSI I'm now on SSDI will I get back payment for the 13 years I should of been getting this money?

Iam in the same boat I receive ssi also I just applied for ssdi from a decease parent I didn't know about this so it have to be some type of back pay I guess only ssa can let us know

I signed up in March this year and I'm still waiting on a letter if I'm approved or not. I hate waiting cause we have bills to pay , to eat and house payments to make! Folks out there could loose their homes,cars,credits and etc etc because S.S. has to make us wait this long! I read somewhere on a S.S. website that sometimes back pay will go to your account even before you get a letter! I'm thinking that'll be nice....but question is when? Also , I have vertigo pretty bad, back issues and partly deaf ...will that be a chance I 'll get approved? ...if my Doctor tells them I am able to work when he doesn't know what I go thru with my Vertigo,back and hearing loss issues ....then I may not be approved!!

Unfortunately there is no black and white answer on when you'll hear back, it can be a long process however. I will say the more medical evidence you have to go with your conditions, the better your chances are of winning your case.

If you just applied for ssd or ssdi it can take over a yr or longer dear, did you hire a Lawyer? I did and can still take along time. I filed last yr about the same time you did but in 2016 and just now got my letter of approval, some wait this long and still find out there are denied .. and if you get approved can take another 6 months for back pay ... I just wanted to know every case is different not saying yours will be long like mine but don't think you will be getting a letter any time soon on a decision. you will probably know early next yr if you were approved. just stay close to your phone and mail box just for things coming make sure social security office has the correct phone # you can be reached at they have tons of people they have to process claims on and if you do not answer the phone they will go to the next person and they can not work on your application if they need some information from you very important they can get a hold of you at anytime. Good luck I hope you hired a lawyer I did I know they take a cut but I think it makes a big difference and helps your case more when you have a lawyer .
I got approved for social security they said I would get it July first and I haven't got it yet
