Lump sum back payment

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on

I received two lump sum payments, but I have not spent all of the funds. I want to make a funeral arrangement and buy a car. How soon must I spend the lump sum payment.

Hi there,
You may have up to six months to spend your last lump sum, and I really could not say if you would receive monthly payments as we are not affiliated with the SSA and as such we would not have that information.

My two minor children were recently approved for, I'm guessing SSDI auxiliary benefits from their dad's disability. Neither of my children are disabled themselves but I am their payee. I am unsure of the process and the in's & out's of what my responsibility is as it relates to the handling of these funds. Is there a separate set of rules regarding how to use the funds for non-disabled children receiving auxiliary payments from a disabled parent or do the same rules apply for SSDI as they do for SSI?

Hello,
SSDI and SSI have separate rules for the use of benefits as SSDI is a bit less restrictive. Regardless, if you are worried about spending funds in a manner that is not sanctioned by the SSA, you may want to contact them at 1-800-772-1213.
Best of Luck,
Eric

HI Esther -
Yes, you should definitely bring proof that you have financial obligations that you need to meet if you need an expedited payment for back pay.

I recieved my sons first installment of backpay in Nov.2016 and its now the 6th month for the next installment to come. Will it be automatically deposited into the Dedicated account or will I have to call?

Hi Lita,
If your son is still otherwise eligible, it should be deposited into his dedicated account.

Hi Leslie,
You may want to contact your local SSA office regarding this, they would be able to advise you with information specific to your particular case.

I have been approved and just was told how much my back pay will be and it's so much less than I calculated! I calculated what I was paid an hour and the years allowed to claim and it's ridiculously off!! Why aren't they using my old wages to pay me my back pay?

Hi Carisse,
If you're receiving SSI, they would be using a figure calculated based on what you'd be eligible to receive, rather than the amount that you would be paid if you were able to work at a prior job the same amount of time.

If you can prove that you are facing a "financial emergency" then you may be eligible for an Emergency Advance Payment.

Best of Luck
