What is the Colorado application process for Persons with Disabilities License Plates and Placards?
You can get the Persons with Disabilities Parking Privileges Application (Form DR 2219) by going to your nearest Colorado Motor Vehicle Office or printing the document online.
You and your Colorado licensed doctor just need to complete and sign the application with all necessary information. Remember to indicate if you would like a License Plate or Placard. Once you finish this quick application, you have to bring it to your local Colorado Motor Vehicle Office.

How long are Persons with Disabilities License Plates and Placards Valid in Colorado?
Depending on the Persons with Disabilities License Plate and Placard, the time range and conditions vary.
- Permanent
Your condition isn’t expected to change in your lifetime - Extended
Your condition isn’t expected to change within 30 months after receiving plate or placard - Temporary
Your condition isn’t expect to last more than 30 months after receiving plate or placard - Short Term

Persons with Disabilities Placards need to be renewed every 3 years and verified by a medical professional. Permanent placards, however, can be self-certified, and only every 9 years need to be medically verified.
Are there Colorado Disabled Veteran Plates?
Disabled Veteran Handicap Plates are available for any Colorado resident veteran. However, your impairment needs to be at least 50% service-connected as certified by the Department of Veterans Affairs or from your military branch.

Individuals who intentionally misuse the placards or plates or who make false statements to help someone become eligible can be fined:
- Class 4 Felony: up to $500,000
- Class 1 Misdemeanor: $1,000
You can report Handicap Parking abuse by filing a police report and alerting your local Colorado Motor Vehicle Office immediately.
