Do SSDI benefits continue in favor of spouse of deceased recipient?

My friend's spouse is a US Citizen, receives SSDI and is nearing death. My friend is Mexican. Will she continue to receive her husband's SSDI after he passes or will benefits cease?

My 84 yr old father passed away. My 2 yr old mother and he were collecting SSI benefits. Can she continue to receive his benefit amount?

Hi John,
I'm sorry for your loss.
She may still be eligible for benefits based on your father's work record, but she would not be able to receive his SSI benefits as those are income based.

My husband passed 3 years ago at the age of 62. I will be 58 in a few weeks. I do work, but wanted to know. When can I start collecting his Social Security? What can I earn if I continue to work?

Hi Linda,
You may be able to collect benefits based off of his social security after you reach retirement age, but if you are considered to have a disability by the SSA, you may be able to claim benefits based off of his work record. You may not be able to work in that case, but you would if you waited until retirement.
