Lump sum back payment

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on

I received two lump sum payments, but I have not spent all of the funds. I want to make a funeral arrangement and buy a car. How soon must I spend the lump sum payment.

I am approved for ssdi, the first payment is Aug 23, 2017. I have 2 months of backpay that would be owed to me. However, after the threat of being without shelter, I went into my local office, told them the situation. They dropped the ssi, so they could release my backpay for emergency payment to me. No big deal on the ssi, I wasn't going to qualify anyway. The release was done while I was sitting in the office, and sent to the proccessing department. I was told they have 30 days to proccess it, but that it could come in quicker. I know this was long for the question I have; " How quick might it show up in my direct deposit ?"

Hi James,
I really couldn't say as different financial institutions have varying processing times. You may want to get in touch with your bank about how long it would take.

HI Kimberly,
You may be able to do so, it's a good idea to bring some documentation ( like the eviction notice) with you when you talk to them.

My child currently receives SSI and has since shortly after birth. I'm her only parent and I'm about to receive SSDI benefits and back pay. I'm very concerned about my disabled child and I losing Medicaid and health insurance due to the SSDI back pay I'm expecting. My child is very medically fragile and receive intensive medical care. Both our medical expenses are high. Will a SSDI back pay sum disqualify us for medical insurance? Is there anything I can do?

I am in the process of submitting a statement of claim for the reinstatement of ssi lump sum payment(s) on behalf of a now adult recipient whose childhood lump sums were terminated by ssa due to thee payee not providing documentation to prove authorized use of funds. As a result the remaining lump sum(s) were terminated/denied. The child did not know until now into her adulthood that she has thee option to request reinstatement etc. Likelihood of approval ??? Prior experience ???

HI CJ,
I really could not say the likelihood of approval, but depending on their current situation, they may be eligible for these benefits.

Hi there. I was receiving food stamps then was determined to be disabled and get ssi/ssdi of $750/mo. Then I got $9500 back pay. Will this money disqualify me from getting SNAP since it's over the asset limit or does my presumably permanent disability make my assets viewed differently? If so, how could I save and invest it into a small business that would allow me to work towards getting off ssi in the future? Are there any ways to utilize the money for something sustainable for myself? I'm 45 and don't know if another opportunity will come again soon.. Is there something to do with paying into my medicare that lifts the limits as well? Thank you for your time

Hi Angelia,

Sorry to hear that! Unfortunately there is no black and white answer. This process can take a while.

Best of Luck,

Hi Nene,
if you're receiving SSI benefits, they should come the next month after you receive your award letter. If you're getting SSDI benefits, they would start five months after you receive your award letter. Back pay is usually paid four months after starting benefits for SSDI and in three installments for SSI back pay.

Hi There,

Unfortunately, Social Security disability claimants typically have to wait one to two months after approval before they will see their first Social Security Disability monthly payment.

Hi there,
The SSA assigns a portion of the household income to the child to determine eligibility.
