Lump sum back payment

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on

I received two lump sum payments, but I have not spent all of the funds. I want to make a funeral arrangement and buy a car. How soon must I spend the lump sum payment.

I was denied for disability benefits in March 2016 and I appealed it, finally had a hearing and was told the judge approved my claim and ruled in my favor so would I receive back pay from last year?

Hi Marcus,

Congrats on getting approved! Back pay generally goes back to the time for which you first applied for disability.

Hi Catrina,
You would receive another 2000, and then the rest of the back pay will be paid out in the third installment.

Hi I was awarded fully favorable benefits June 2017 can SSI take most of my backpay if I had a previous bank account? 3years ago I carried a balance of a bit more then 2000 for some months. Once approved for SSDI and SSI Can they access this past bank account info without my consent and take away money from my backpay that was owed to me because of my bank account balance? SSI office ended up taking 20,000 from me and sent me a check in one lump sum for the remainder of what was owed to me. I also did not have a lawyer representing me and my application was filed Sept 2013

Hi Tammy,
SSI's rules about savings would only apply to people who are applying for benefits and those who are receiving them, if you were not eligible for back pay going back 3 years, it may not affect your case.

Hi Nitta,
Generally disability benefits are not able to be garnished, however you may want to contact the office that handles Medicaid in your state for more details about your case.

Hi I'm asking "if my son is owed back pay and we're currently homeless how would I go about asking for emergency relief funds from the ssi" and what would be the quickest way of going about it?

Hi, I was awarded ssi back in April after waiting a year. I received my first back pay installment in June for 2,687 from the approximate 10,800 awarded.I was on GR for 221. a month during the waiting period, so that amount was reduced by 2,652 leaving approximately 5,400. I need dental work done as I have broken caps (3) front teeth plus a bottom partial, none of which are covered by Dental Cal. During the year I survived on 221 a month I lost my car, my credit has nose dived and conventional treatment for my cancer has become a non existing option unless I wish to be chemically or surgically castrated. I filed paperwork to get about 4,200 released a month ago , and today after two visits to the local ssa office and unreturned phone calls to a case worker I have never met or spoken to, I get a denial letter stating that I should use the 2,600 from back in June as a down payment to a dentist and work out a payment plan. The letter wasn't even signed! After trying to get by on 221 for a year I should have that 2,600 tucked away? I turned in the estimate from the dentist thinking I could get the work done cheap in Mexico and have some left over for a down payment for some transportation. Who's money is it anyways? or am I just being ungrateful? So sick of waiting and waiting. Thanks for letting me vent.

I receive disability as of this month. I have taken a turn for the worst medically and became homeless today. Can I get rest of my back pay in lump sum to buy me a camper?
