Hello , My son is 3 and was diagnosed with level 2 ASD in July 2017 I applied in August 2017 and turned in all document from the child's psychiatric and from his IEP meeting from school , also all therapys he was taking before diagnosis from the inland regional center. Its being reviewed at the moment. He is in preschool in a special needs class. How long do you possibly think it will take before if or when will be approved?

Hi there,
I could not say as his approval may be dependent on meeting the income and financial resource requirements for SSI.

My son was diagnosed with Autism and has delays. I am recently separated from my husband and I work full time. Why do I keep getting denied. I spend most of my check on housing, transportation as well as take care of my son. Please advice.

Hi Christine,

I am so sorry to hear that. It is actually quite difficult to get approved for SSI with autism. You are not alone there. Wishing you and your son nothing but the best.

Hi Cyndi,

If approved, she would get backpay going back to the date in which she initially applied for disability benefits.

Hi There,

You may be able to. Autism cases are tough to win, but it's possible. Every case is different so I can't say for sure how long it will take.

My adult 35 yr old son has been disabled since birth and was in special needs classrooms his entire school yrs. He was diagnosed with autism and he also has epilepsy that is controlled with medication along with mild cerebral palsy that effects his balance and fine and gross motor skills. my husband and I have guardianship over him and he lives with us. He has been receiving SSI Supplemental since he was 18 yrs old. Now all of a sudden they are doing disability redetermination on him and I have to take him to one of their doctors next week for evaluation. He is considered high functioning but due to behaviors such as rocking, pacing, self abuse when upset and inappropriate laughing plus self stimulating behaviors he can not work in a regular job. He was actually fired from a job called an On clave job where it's through a community based program for mentally challenged adults with a job coach on site overseeing their work and keeping an eye on them... He threw one of his autistic fits over something and the manager of the restaurant witnessed it and said he was a threat. Which he is not.. He only hits himself when upset. Should I be worried about them cancelling benefits? I don't see how a doctor seeing him one short time can properly diagnose him. I mean he will see the behaviors because they are always present but this is really stressing me out... I don't want to have to hire a lawyer to fight... I'm so tired of this... It's stressful enough for parents of disabled kids but when the system fails us it's even worse... Thank you for any advice you can give.

Hi Tina,

I am so sorry to hear that. I would just make sure that all of his paperwork is order and to get any sort of doctor's notes or recommendations. Attorneys are a really helpful resource though, especially if you would have to appeal your decision.

Wishing you and your family nothing but the best.

My grandson, 3 years old has shown signs of autism since before his 2nd birthday. We started taking him to Stepping Stones once a week and even though they dont actually diagnose children, they give their proffesonal opinion. And that is my grandson is on the autism spectram. My question is where do i take him for the diagnosis. And how do I go about getting him a check started?

Hi Casey,

If your grandson has a primary care physician, maybe contact him/her for a recommendation. You can also try contacting your local hospital to see if they have any referrals for an official diagnosis.
