SSDI length of time for back pay?

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on

When I initially met with my attorney, I was told that back pay would go back one year from application, minus 5 months (I had already waited over 2 years to file because I was told I would have "full recovery" after my 2 fusion surgeries). I've received my acceptance letter but not my back pay yet, and during my search for more info on the process I came across a SSDI page stating that even if it takes 24 months for your claim to get approved, you can only receive pay for 12 months. Can anybody help clarify this for me please? Also, I have friends who received their back pay before or immediately after their approval letters (NY), but I've seen posts by people saying it took several months so I was wondering if there was a formula for when I can expect mine? I'm not looking to go on a spending spree, but I have a mortgage, car payment, property and school taxes, and children to feed and clothe as well as one in an expensive college. Thank you for taking the time to read this, and all input is appreciated.

Hi Jennifer,

The process does take a while, however it has not been two months yet so hold tight. If you would like, you can always call your local office to get a check in on the status.

My lawyer said I was approved for ssdi but it doesn’t show this information on ssa website. Does this mean I will be receiving benefits soon or could my lawyer have misinformed me ? How does my lawyer know the decision before me ?

Hi Darrell,

Your lawyer fees will be the first thing paid before you receive your benefits. That is how he might know before you. If your lawyer has received money, you shouldn't be too far behind!

Hi,

It generally takes about 4 months to receive back pay and then will come in installments every 6 months depending on the size of the payment.

Hi Kay,

The length of time to hear back varies from case to case! You can try calling the SSA at 1-800-772-1213 to find out if they have any updates.

Hi There,

You may be eligible for Social Security disability benefits. You'll need to meet the Blue Book listing (I would consult with your doctor) as well as meet either the work credit requirements for SSDI or be within the income limits for SSI.

I was initially denied after filing in Aug/2019, hired a lawyer and he filed the reconsideration only 3 weeks ago. On the website today, it says a medical decision has been made...I'm wondering if it's a bad sign to get a decision so soon?

Hi,

For the most part, you can't really gather much from the length of time it takes to make a decision. It just means that they have moved on to the technical determination.

I started receiving my ssdi benefits in Oct of 19. Still have not received my back payment. SS stated when called about it that it was at processing center but said nothing more. What could be taking it soo long to be processed and is there a way to speed it up?
