CAN I WORK AND STILL RECEIVE SSDI?

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on

I RECEIVE SSDI DUE TO A PERMANTLY DISSABLED RIGHT ARM AND HAND (THAT IS WHY I TYPE IN ALL CAPS, I.E., ITS EASIER); I HAVE SEVERE BACK PAIN AND I HAVE DIFFICULTY WALKING AS A RESULT OF A BROKEN NECK (FRACTURE OF C5 & C6). I STILL WANT TO WORK THOUGH... DOING WHAT, I DON'T KNOW. CAN I WORK AND RECEIVE SSDI AND IS THERE AN INCOME LIMIT? GRANT FROM GEORGIA.

I have been collecting SSDI since 1993. I am 57. Receive the short CDR form every 7 years. Started working part time 8/2016 for family friend. Mostly from home. Reported earnings to SSA. Just got my 7 year short SCR form, how likely am I to get a full review because I earn $550. My profile is low, 0074. Thank you.

Hi Brian,

If you are a work trial period from the SSA, your monthly income cannot exceed $835/month.

However, once approved for SSDI, your monthly income cannot exceed the 2018 SGA limit which is $1,180/Month

I been on ssi since 2002.
Ssa automatically gave me ssdi in 2013 ontop of ssi.
I have a ticket to work and work in a sheltered vocational workshop.
I never filled these forms out before, since my former
Payee did all that for me.
I am certain i am going to be kicked off disability cause i don't know how to explain in every detail how my disability affects my work or if i can do other work.
I been in this sheltered workshop since 2005.
Some of the problems that come with schizoaffective disorder, have been interfering with my work performance, but failed to report it to my supervisor and to my mental health therapist, which
Its not documented in my records.
I basically screwed myself out of continuing getting disability benefits.
Without my benefits im going to go homeless.

Hi There,

I am very sorry to hear that. You may want to speak with a Social Security advocate regarding that.

Hi Brian,

Social Security attorneys are paid on contingency fees. Meaning they do not charge upfront, they only get paid if you win your case.

Hi Pat,

You can still work while receiving SSDI. The limits are $1,180 per month for non-blind applicants and $1,970 for blind applicants.

i receive ssdi but just recently accepted a 10-12 hours a week part time job at a golf course where my monthly income will be about 500$ My research tells me I can continue to earn that amount indefinitely without jeopardizing my monthly disability amount i do believe i must report this on a monthly basis to social security I have called ss but i don't trust the answers they have given me
the pamphlet they sent me says i can earn somewhere close to 800$ monthly my question is can i continue to work at that income level (under 800$) and not lose my disability?

Hi Tom,

You are correct, you can still make up to $800 a month and receive your benefits. Congrats on the job!

I am 63 years old and have not applied for social security I was born in 1955. I have had fibromyalgia for 40 years....before they acknowledged it as a severe medical condition. I have been under a doctors care the entire time. It is also in my insurance records.I didn't know I could apply for disability as a result of having Fibromyalgia.... can I? If so how long is the approval process? Also, if approved.... could I receive back payments? How many years would they go back?

Hi Landi,

Yes, you could be approved for SSDI benefits. However, the time for approval varies because every case is different. You would get back pay from the initial date you applied.
