When I initially met with my attorney, I was told that back pay would go back one year from application, minus 5 months (I had already waited over 2 years to file because I was told I would have "full recovery" after my 2 fusion surgeries). I've received my acceptance letter but not my back pay yet, and during my search for more info on the process I came across a SSDI page stating that even if it takes 24 months for your claim to get approved, you can only receive pay for 12 months. Can anybody help clarify this for me please? Also, I have friends who received their back pay before or immediately after their approval letters (NY), but I've seen posts by people saying it took several months so I was wondering if there was a formula for when I can expect mine? I'm not looking to go on a spending spree, but I have a mortgage, car payment, property and school taxes, and children to feed and clothe as well as one in an expensive college. Thank you for taking the time to read this, and all input is appreciated.
I got a decision saying that I was diable. under section 1614(a)(3) (A) of the SS act beginng on April 18 2016 but filed on April 1, 2014 so what does this mean
In reply to I got a decision saying that by Anonymous (not verified)
Hi there,
there's two types of disability onset dates, there is the Alleged Onset Date, or AOD, which is the date you submit as the date you became disabled. There is also the Established Onset Date or EOD, which is the date that the SSA decides as the date of disability. I think that the date you have may be the date on which you were given a favorable decision by the SSA, rather than either onset date.
I just received my FULLY FAVORABLE decision letter today. How long before I get my back pay & monthly disability payments?
In reply to I just received my FULLY by Delores (not verified)
Hi Delores,
The SSA usually has a five month waiting period before you'll start getting monthly checks, and you should receive your back pay four months from the time you start getting monthly checks.
I was approved for ssi/ssdi.... I applied in March of 2014 was denied several months later ... Then I reapplied again in April 2015 and got approved for ssi/ssdi on June 2015 and the disability I applied for is what I applied for in 2014 not including the 7 years before that.. My question is why did I not receive or get back pay for ssdi? I've called ss office they had no answer I still don't nderdtand why
In reply to I was approved for ssi/ssdi.. by Anonymous (not verified)
Hi there,
You may have been determined ineligible for back pay due to your established onset date (EOD) for disability. If it's the same date that you were approved, you would not be eligible for any back pay.

I had my hearing, got my award letter. I have two different numbers one family benefits you're estimated, then approx. so rate. Back pay starts in Aug. ok now my question is when will I get my monthly payments? Waiting well over two years, along with all the other people who posted on here. I have lost everything, no where to live, changed addresses 10 times in just a year. My kids don't live with me, because when will I put them? So, please this is very frustrating! Will I receive the back pay in August, does the monthly come after that. What are the difference between the two numbers? I don't understand it?
In reply to I had my hearing, got my by Danielle E (not verified)
Hi Danielle,
I'm sorry to hear about all that. It generally takes five months from approval to get your benefits, and four months after that for back pay. I would contact the SSA with documentation of your situation (past due bills, ect.) They may be able to expedite your payments based on this information.
In reply to Hi Danielle, by Bryan
Thank you for getting back with me! I have contacted them once already, they had made an error in the first award letter! I don't understand this?? I did speak with my attorney he gave me a rough estimate of SSI backpay for 2999. He not once mentioned to me that I did not qualify for SSDI. I did remember that he said that I did, he just wasn't to sur of the amount?? I have been homeless, careless, jobless, penniless! The his has got to stop! If I'm being misguided I would really like to know! It did specifically say 00.00 you owe. We owe you 00.00 August both parties plainly stated we broke even! I'm confused and done with this, I lost my kids. I'm just not really ready to spend my life living with this disease alone, and begging for scraps! Thank you!!

Hi Danielle,
You may still be eligible for back pay, regardless of housing situation.

Hi Brittany,
I would contact the SSA, you can call them at 1-800-772-1213
I waited 2 years for my hearing, and finally had it on March 2016. I was awarded my SSD, received my letter 2 weeks after my hearing, one month later received my letter with amounts of my back pay and monthly payment. I finally received my first monthly payment this May 2016, BUT have not received my back pay, although my lawyer has received his payment!! I have went to my local Social Security Office and they told me soon that because when I initially applied I also checked SSI and they are checking that I didn't receive money from that, i said to them you can clearly see by looking at my ss# that I didn't, so left that office still no answer, I have since called that office several times to find out and they still tell me oh it will take maybe another 6-9 weeks each time I call because I applied for SSI. I said to them OMG how hard is it to look and see that I didn't, I have my rent thats still behind, bills, my son's tuition, trouble buying food. In the end, the system needs to be improved so we don't have to wait so long for our benefits.
In reply to I waited 2 years for my by Anonyomous (not verified)
Hi There,
It's true, it takes a while these days to get approved. They may be able to expedite your back pay if you contact your local SSA office with some documentation that you have some bills in arrears, they may be better able to help you then.

Hi Eugene,
Usually applicants will receive their first installment of SSDI back pay 60 days after being approved for disability.
Hi, I was approved for disability on December 2 2015, my attorney was paid his part January 4th 2016 in which he told me I should receive my back pay March or April, now he has retired, I received my first check in February, now here it is June 2016, I still have not received my backpay. I have called Social Security a couple of times, and I just get a run a round. Should I just go to the Social Security office in person?
In reply to Hi, I was approved for by Bonnie (not verified)
Hi Bonnie,
It may be a good idea to do so, they would be able to let you know what exactly is going on with your back pay.
Back payments when are they recieved
In reply to Back payments when are they by Karen Byars (not verified)
Hi Karen,
Back payments usually come about four months after you start receiving benefits.
I have a question. I was finally approved for SSDI after almost 4 years. I have gotten my first check. I have $45,000.00 back pay coming to me. When will get that? I am behind on most everything, double payments. We have done all that we can possibly do. We are in need of catching up on bills. Our air conditioner is it in this hot weather and need some minor house repairs done. I have been advised that due to declining health that I need to be closer to our children so they could help us out. My husband is disabled also. We are needing to sell our house and relocate for assistance. There is a little house that I can purchase near my daughters but I need 15,000.00 of my backpay in order to finalize purchase. If I could possibly get 20,000.00 released to me so we could relocate, catch up on bills, get air fixed in our current house so we can sell it. Please help me. I've been told so many different things. I'm planning on being at the Social Security office Monday morning. What do I need to take in order for them to help me and have $ released? I need this by June 21 or I won't have a house. Thank You

Hi Sheree,
generally, back pay comes about four months from the time you start receiving benefits or four months after you are approved for benefits. You may be able to have your payment expedited, I would contact the SSA with documentation of your urgent need for those funds.
I got approved for ssi June of 2015. I received some of my back pay the end of June 2015. I had to get an advance on Sept. 2015 for bills I incured for the two years I waited to get approved. I have not received anything since it is now June 2016. I get my monthly allotment, but no more back pay. Is this normal, will I get more the end of this month or a year after I received my last back pay?
In reply to I got approved for ssi June by Misty (not verified)
Hi Misty,
It really would depend on how much back pay you were awarded, you may have received all of it already. but generally the SSA pays out SSI back pay every six months.
I was given SSDI off my father when he passed away, I started getting it on the 3rd of each month in March of this year, and there is a large one lump sum of backpay I am supposed to recieve via direct deposit but it was February 2016 I was approved, and a representative on the phone said it is currently processing but they're likely backed up with claims so it could go through at any given time as of right now, then again it could take a long time due to being backed up...I'm sort of hurting right now and could use that backpay...there is nothing that can be done to speed the process I am guessing? How long could it potentially be?
In reply to I was given SSDI off my by Henry (not verified)
Hi Henry,
I am sorry to hear that. If it was approved in February of this year, I would expect it to come anytime now! It usually takes around four months to arrive.
My daughter went to see the social security examiner today and struggled with the tests and couldn't see very well... The Dr. Said he was gone sign his signature and send it in today... Does that mean my daughter will be approved for benefits if the Dr. Sign his signature

Hi Keya,
Your daughter may be approved, however the SSA makes the final decision rather than than doctor doing the examination.
i apply for social security in 2012 was denied so i appeal it and won i have got my first ssd check may 2016 i called social security about my back pay they said in 2014 i was getting supplement social security but i was not getting any checks from social security what is wrong there.
In reply to i apply for social security by david (not verified)
Hi David,
I'm not entirely sure, but if you never received those benefits, you may have been the victim of identity theft. You can find some more info about that here:

I applied for disability in January and I was just told 2 days ago over the phone that I was approved so its been 5 months since I applied and I'm approved for SSI does that mean I can't get back pay? My parents applied for me over 20 years ago too but why haven't I got any mail or an approval letter and does my son get paid too since he is my dependent he is 18 months old and I'm in Davis county Utah can I also get paid by my state and how much will I get paid? And workforce services has been helping me financially until I either got approved and if not id have to find a job immediately but since I'm approved will I have to pay them anything back even though I was never told id have to and if I get married how will that affect my SSI that ill be getting and how soon can I get paid I've tried asking these questions over the phone but they keep saying they can't answer them for me ?
In reply to I applied for disability in by brittany (not verified)
Hi Brittany,
You should actually be entitled to back pay. SSI recipients only need to wait for one month before they are entitled to back pay, while SSDI recipients need to wait for five. As for your state supplement, I'm afraid I cannot answer that for you! The best person to ask would be someone at your local office.
I applied for SS disability years ago, in between i got widows pension from the VA from late husband.I got widows pension for little over one year. I stopped widows got approved for SS Disability Finally. I been getting checks for months, have not gotten back pay from Social Security. Can they keep it because i got widows pension prior. They asked me if i got SSi prior, is that widows pension. This is my Social Security that i worked. Confused on all of it..

Hi Debra,
You are likely not eligible for back pay because you were already receiving some form of Social Security benefits.
I am currently at the hearing level, my appeal was filed 15 months ago. I initially applied Sept 2014 with an onset date of Feb 2013. Last month I was diagnosed with a stage 4 metastatic breast cancer which I understand is a terminal prognosis. My attorney requested an expedited hearing and all medical results from biopsy, pet scan and letter from doctor stating inoperable, was submitted to the hearing office a few weeks ago. I contacted the hearing office last week and was informed it is being worked and is almost ready for scheduling. Is it possible, since my condition is terminal, that they may make a decision without a hearing? If so, is that decision typically made within 30 days? From what I've read, those cases are fast cycled. In addition, if approved, whether or not a hearing is involved, is the payment, back pay/monthly payment etc. fast cycled also or does the attorney need to do something to prompt the payment to be expedited as well?
In reply to I am currently at the hearing by Karen (not verified)
Hi Karen,
Yes, the SSA can expedite cases like this, but generally they expedite it based off their own criteria, your lawyer may not need to do anything to have it expedited.
Hi Deanna.. I stopped working January 1 2016 due to my illness and applied for Social Security May 24th my claim is with the determination examiner now he sending me to a IQ and mental status exam June 27th if I'm approved how far will my back pay go?
In reply to Hi Deanna.. I stopped working by Karen (not verified)
Hi Karen,
That will depend on when you are approved! But since you haven't been approved yet, you should be eligible for at least two months of back pay. It has been seven months since you became disabled, assuming you are deemed disabled since January 1, 2016.
In reply to Hi Karen, by Deanna
Thank you very much for replying to my comments also I was wondering would that be back pay for SSI and SSDI if I get both?
In reply to Thank you very much for by Karen (not verified)
Hi Karen,
You may get back pay for both, but if that is the case, your back pay would be no more than $733 for each month of back pay.
