Turned 62 . Things Are About to Change . Fretful

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on

Hi; i am now 62 y.o.and live in Mississippi. i have managed to live on SSI benefits for 10 years. Today the local SSA called and informed me that i now have to apply for early retirement. I get that. Hoping you all will please answer some other concerns i have.

Do i have any options in this process? Should i get my SSI lawyer involved?

Once i am switched from SSI to retirement, will i still be considered a disabled person or will i be like anyone who works then retires?

Will the same SSI rules/restrictions, i.e., can only own one car or one house, be the same with the new retirement benefit plan? Will i still be required to report any earnings or if i sell my house and move in with someone?

While on SSI, i've had the Magnolia health plan(division of medicaid) and that has been adequate. I'm told that with retirement, i will change to Medicare. Will i get both Ms medicaid as well as medicare? Will i have to forfeit the Magnolia plan?

I'm told that i'll be getting somewhere around a $20 increase is all and that this check will be with me till i die...true?

Could you guys answer any other considerations i've not mentioned and that i should be aware of?

Thanks in advance

Kevin

Hi there,
Retirement benefits do not have earned or unearned income limits, however SSI does, and you may be able to receive both. You may also be eligible for both Medicaid and Medicare benefits at the same time, and you may be eligible for help with Medicare premiums. I can't confirm any increases in your benefit amount as we are not affiliated with the SSA or the federal government.

Yes, you are required to file for early retirement when you are on SSI. They can stop your SSI for choosing not to file if you could get money. That means that SSI pays less or nothing, if the retirement is higher.

Medicare won't start until age 65 however. If you get $1 from SSI, your Medicaid will remain the same. If your retirement is too high for even $1 on on SSI, then Medicaid will be decided by your county.

Hi there,
That depends on your states rules, many enroll you into medicaid automatically.
