How does State SSI Supplement Work?

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on

Our 19 year old permanently disabled son just received his first SSI payment. He lives with us (parents and our other son). His federal payment was reduced by ⅓ because we are paying his living expenses. In addition he received a CA State supplement.
Questions….
1. If he starts paying his share of living expenses which exceed Federal SSI, but are less than Federal SSI plus CA State SSI will his payment be reduced by ⅓? How does the State Supplement figure in to the equation?
2. The process to start paying living expenses seems like catch 22….if his share of living expenses exceed current payment he can not afford his share BUT in order to NOT have the ⅓ deducted he needs to pay the higher amount. How do you move to recipient paying full share when he does not receive full payment.

Thank you so much for your help!

Hi there,
1) I really could not say, however if you did not pay his living expenses, then the SSA would not count those paid living expenses as income for the purposes of calculating SSI benefits.
2) You may want to contact the SSA regarding this, as they can help you through the process of ensuring that they know what he is paying as far as living expenses.
