SSDI length of time for back pay?

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on

When I initially met with my attorney, I was told that back pay would go back one year from application, minus 5 months (I had already waited over 2 years to file because I was told I would have "full recovery" after my 2 fusion surgeries). I've received my acceptance letter but not my back pay yet, and during my search for more info on the process I came across a SSDI page stating that even if it takes 24 months for your claim to get approved, you can only receive pay for 12 months. Can anybody help clarify this for me please? Also, I have friends who received their back pay before or immediately after their approval letters (NY), but I've seen posts by people saying it took several months so I was wondering if there was a formula for when I can expect mine? I'm not looking to go on a spending spree, but I have a mortgage, car payment, property and school taxes, and children to feed and clothe as well as one in an expensive college. Thank you for taking the time to read this, and all input is appreciated.

Hi James,

Sorry to hear that. I would recommend calling the SSA and speaking to a representative. 1-800-772-1213.

Someone called March 5 the saying she was deceased and I went up there and they gave me run around. I went up there 2 weeks ago to get it fixed and they say wait 4-7 days for her back pay how long do it take for them to reinstate her benefits

Hi there,
I really could not say, but if she is in dire need of her benefits, you may want to contact the SSA with documentation of her hardship ( like an eviction notice, overdue medical bills, collections letter, etc)

My husband had his hearing on 5/20/17 and on Monday the lawyer confirmed that we had won. Yeah! However, I have not yet received any letter from SSA and have no idea when we can expect his first check (I'm not even looking for back pay). I see that people have gotten theirs a lot faster than this. When should I expect to see anything from SSA. We will call again this Monday but I have no idea how long between the letter and the first months deposit.

HI there,
Your husband should start receiving benefits about five months from when he receives his award letter, and he should get back pay about four months after that.

Hi Brina,
I really could not say as we are not affiliated with the SSA or the federal government and as such we would not have any information about your specific benefits eligibility.

Hi Tammy,
I'm sorry to hear about that! Depending on your Established Onset Date, you may not have been eligible for back pay.

I've applied for SSDI on Jan 30 2017 and got qualified for it and received the SSDI check on July but no back pay. I've stopped by SSA about it and they said no I don't get back pay. Something isn't right.

HI Teresa,
You may not eligible for back pay for various reasons, for example if you're receiving benefits based off of your income rather than work record they may have started benefits as soon as they could, which would mean you may not be eligible for back pay.

If you want to court and your lawyer presented a paper saying that examiner found you disabled 2014 are you entitled to your benefits?

Hi Jennifer,

That alone is not the sure thing that will definitely get your case won, however the more medical evidence you have like that that proves your disability the better your chances are of winning your case.

So I got my award letter in the mail for ssdi but they said they are withholding my benefits for 2011 to 2017 it says they have reduce these payments if I was receiving ssi and that they will send me another letter if they do or don't so what does this mean
