SSDI length of time for back pay?

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on

When I initially met with my attorney, I was told that back pay would go back one year from application, minus 5 months (I had already waited over 2 years to file because I was told I would have "full recovery" after my 2 fusion surgeries). I've received my acceptance letter but not my back pay yet, and during my search for more info on the process I came across a SSDI page stating that even if it takes 24 months for your claim to get approved, you can only receive pay for 12 months. Can anybody help clarify this for me please? Also, I have friends who received their back pay before or immediately after their approval letters (NY), but I've seen posts by people saying it took several months so I was wondering if there was a formula for when I can expect mine? I'm not looking to go on a spending spree, but I have a mortgage, car payment, property and school taxes, and children to feed and clothe as well as one in an expensive college. Thank you for taking the time to read this, and all input is appreciated.

Hi Riley,
It may be due to a change in your disability benefits, you may want to contact the SSA regarding this.

It's been almost 16 months my husband was awarded permanent disability. They informed us at S.S. office by appt that there was no longer back pay. I have talked to different pal and they have received back pay. Is there back pay. I've asked them for explanation and response is there is no longer back pay.

Hi Rachel,
I'm sorry to hear about that! Your husband may have become ineligible for back pay due to his onset date, or his back pay was withheld for some other reason.

So my back pay was right over$10,000. Its took a few weeks but now I am actually receiving $3800 back pay due to past child support. My local child support office said I only owed $2000 something so that's good that that much will be reimbursed to me at a later day. Well, on my SSA account online it shows the one time payment of the$3800. My question is, when will I see this in my bank account? Someone help Im freaking out. I've been waiting on this since 2014, such a long, horrible process.

HI there,
It can take varying amounts of time due to processing by your banking instituition, but if you're receiving SSI benefits, you should receive that back pay within the next 6 months if you have already received back pay.

If you see that on the SSA site should have a date when it will go in if not just call them they are very helpful tho I would call your local ssa office National call center is a headache:)

Hello when I checked online account mine said one time payment it had 9/22/2017 beside it. Does that mean it was released that day? I don't have a checking account it says paper check. Does it mean it was mailed on this date?
