Lump sum back payment

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on

I received two lump sum payments, but I have not spent all of the funds. I want to make a funeral arrangement and buy a car. How soon must I spend the lump sum payment.

Hi Alisha,
I really could not say what you yourself would get, but SSI offers up to $733 a month in benefits, in addition to whatever supplemental income your state would provide as well.

Hi Lisa,
You may have to prove a documented need or hardship that the expedited benefits would help solve. In the meantime, you may want to contact the office in your state that coordinates Medicaid, they might be able to help with transport to doctor's appointments.

Hi Doris,
The average wait time for an ALJ appeal hearing is about 17 months, so hang in there!

Hi Brenda,
You may be able to contact the SSA with some documentation of your need for that lump sum, they may be able to expedite your benefits with that.

Hi there,
I'm not sure that the SSA would be willing to do that, they generally only release back pay like that when they receive documented proof of hardship due to lack of funds.

Our daughter was finally approved for disability in mid 2016 but it was retroactive to January. She received a lump sum. Can we pay her back rent from January to current with the funds she received?

Thank you. I looked at the link. It says use the money for current needs. We received a lump sum in August that was retroed from Jan. I think alloting for the rent for Jan - August is appropiate. Would you agree?

because my husband died last year and this year I became disable. I just found out I was approved but because I live with daughter and her husband and their nine year old my ssi was cut to $269 a month and my lump sum is only $1,347 one payment and that is totally wrong. I am in the process of moving been sleeping on a mattress on floor since August very bad on my back and legs. Is there any way I can ask for all of my lump sum and to get higher monthly payment. I need bed mattress and other things for the apartment. I do not know how long it will take too get lum sum she said at least within two weeks i should have it. I want to move befor the first and then my first check is coming then. but I do not have enough to move what should do

Hi Nuggie,
You may be able to contact the SSA with documentation of your hardship, they may expedite your enefits in this case. Generally monthly benefit amount is calculated by the amount of aid you may get from family members, your income, and your household's income.

I received my first installment in March and they said I would get the Last installment in September. But they only gave me a little off the second installment. Told me I had to wait til March again for another installment. I need this money to move and by furniture and fix my car. I have nothing. Lost everything when I was unable to work any longer. Have not worked since 2011.

I was wondering how long does it take to receive your last lump amount for your back pay? Received one in August so will I be receiving the other payment in December?
