Qualifying children

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on

I have children and their father has recently went for a hearing is waiting on a decision. I was told that the kids will qualify for benefits. I have several questions.
How is the amount determined?
What are the rules for the cutoff age to recieve benefits?
Do the children recieve back pay as well?
What steps if any do I need to take to set up their case?
If a child is 18 but still in high school do they qualify, and for how long?

I am on ssdi and for some reason they took my money I worked for and put some in my kids name. When all my kids are 18 will that money come back to me? I think it's unfair that they give money that I worked for to the kids and I can't afford to loose that extra money at all. I am praying that it will come back to me. My kids are not disabled. I wss on LTD and I was dropped when I got ssdi. I lost money and now I am worried I may loose more money. Will the full benefit that was my money come back to me?

Hi Cindy,
Your children may be eligible for benefits based on your disability award, however you would not receive more when they turn 18.

I have full custody of both my children. My children's father are receiving SSDI and did not put my children on his application due to him conceiving them out of wedlock and being angry being the judge granted his supervised visitation at my discretion do to the incendiary relation between me and his wife. How do I apply to get SSDI for my children. The courts have notified me that he gets $776 per month.

Hi there,
Your children may qualify for benefits based on your work record, however for information specific to your particular case, you may want to reach out to your local SSA office.

If your 19 years old and tried before to file for Ssi but missed appointment and trying to get ssi with you being the pay e can you do it that way or is it mandatory for someone to be your pay e. Also can you file for ssdi if your 19 years old

Hi there,
The SSA would decide if you needed a payee for your benefits. If they decide you need one, it is mandatory that you have one. In addition, you can file for SSDI at 19 years old, if a parent is receiving SSDI benefits themselves or is receiving retirement benefits, you may be able to qualify as a disabled adult child under their work record.

I just had my hearing after waiting 3 1/2 years for it for SS Disability, I have Joint custody with my wife of my now 8 year old Granddaughter and had it since she was 2 years old, was told that she would be able to receive a separate benefit when my SS Disability finally gets approved, is this true?
Can my wife also rec a separate benefit?
Thanks

My ex husband received SSDI and our two children receive auxiliary benefits from him.
Since he receives medicaid/ Medicare, from the state for insurance and cannot provide insurance for our children does the state automatically give my kids state insurance or am i responsible for it?

Hi there,
Medicare and Medicaid benefits only offer individual coverage, and as such your children may not qualify for state based health insurance solely due to your ex's disability.

Hi Lynn,

I am so sorry to hear that. If he wasn't receiving disability payments when he died then your child would not be able to receives those payments.

Best,
Eric

I have just taken over my 10 year old great niece, her mom is in jail and CPS gave her to us back in October 2016. I just received a temporary order and the attorney mention that I have to get the child Medicaid, and I don't know where to start. I have to do this in ten days from tomorrow when the judge signs the papers. Lost
