Benefit Verification Letter

Individuals who receive Social Security Disability benefits may encounter circumstances in which they will need to provide proof of the benefits that they receive. If this occurs, the individual will have to request a “benefit verification letter” from the SSA. A benefit verification letter is sometimes referred to as a budget letter, a benefits letter, a proof of income letter, or a proof of award letter.

This letter can be used as proof of:

  • Income when applying for a loan or mortgage
  • Income for state or local benefits
  • Income for assisted housing
  • Medicare coverage
  • Retirement status
  • Disability; and/or
  • Age.

You can access your benefit verification letter online at the Social Security Administration’s (SSA) website by creating a “My Social Security Account”. You can also request a copy by telephone. When requesting your benefit verification letter, you are allowed to pick and choose which information you would like to be included and which information you would like to be left out.
