Ssdi denied, ssi still pending

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on

I just went online today and saw that my ssdi was denied. I filled for ssdi and ssi on the exact same day. I figured my ssdi would be denied since I know that I don't have enough work credits. Yesterday the status on both said that a medical decision has been made and that someone may contact me. Now today the ssdi says denied but the ssi still says the same. What do you think this means?

Hi Anita,

It's possible to be denied SSI but approved for SSDI. Both have the same medical requirements. They differ in technical requirements. For SSI, you need to be below an income limit while for SSDI, you need a specific number of work credits based on your age. It's possible that you exceeded SSI's income limits so you were denied. The SSA may be checking to see if you have enough work credits for SSDI.

I was denied ssdi. I have a rare bone issue that requires surgery and I can’t find anyone to do it right no but still searching. I cannot carry my 2 toddler children walk, stand, sit or sleep without pain I cannot clean etc and don’t drive in case of severe paint while driving might be dangerous. They told me medical evidence shows I have physical impairment in which I cannot lift carry etc. they said I DO have good enough strength to walk, sit, or, and move about to compete less strenuous activity. I don’t understand how this is determined. I know I cannot do these things I can’t even keep up on my house sweep mop laundry etc without paint I the point I sit and cry. I don’t understand, and what do I do now?

Hi Whitney,

I am sorry to hear that. Unfortunately a majority of people are denied on their initial application. There are a couple of things that I would suggest, speak with an attorney. Their experience would be key. You should also make sure that you are working with a doctor during this time as they can help evaluate your condition with a residual functional capacity form.

If you are not working with an attorney and would like one, please fill out our form here:

Hi There

It may be that they still don't have enough information to make a decision. If they are waiting for more medical records, then they likely are still evaluating your eligibility. If you are able to submit your medical records, or follow up with your attorney/advocate (if you're working with one) to make sure they have submitted them, it can help speed up the decision.

I have end stage renal failure. I was receiving SSI benefits, then I recently received a letter saying my SSI benefits are denied and would resort to zero dollars. The letter said they figured in my social security benefits and the support my mother gives me and I make too much money. But the only income I have is what SSI has given me. Help!

Hi Olivia,

You should be able to appeal their decision. The letter should state how to do so. Make sure you have all documents to support your current financial state.

Hi Cassandra,

It means they are still determining if you are eligible for benefits.

Hi Stephen,

We are not affiliated with the SSA, so that is not something we would know! You can check your MySSA account for updates on your claim!

I got denied for ssi on 5/29/2020 also applied to ssdi same time as ssi. Ssdi says that a medical decision has been made and we are processing your claim. Both update on same day but ssdi wasn’t denied. I have the credits and the disability. Do you think I was approved for ssdi?

Hi Ed,

You may have been approved for ssdi. You should wait a few more weeks to receive the final decision.

Hi Beverly,

They may have made a decision for your SSI claim. You should receive a letter in the mail explaining the decision that was made. Best of luck!

I called the SSA and they informed me that my appeal was sent to quality review after I was denied SSDI and no decision has been made on my SSI . What does that mean?
