Do I Qualify?

Submitted by Deanna on

I was just wondering if i were to qualify for social Security. I have Cerebal Palsey and epilepsy seziures. I recently turned 18 and my parents said i was able to collect social security since i was diagnosis at the age of 3. But they never did because they were my parents. But now since im growing up i think it would really help me out. I'm the only one in my family to have a disability with sezuires and epilepsy seziures. This is all new to my parents and I so i would very much appreciate the help. Please and thank you!

Hi There,

It's tough to say for sure, but the more physical evidence you have of your disability, the better your chances are of winning. Best of luck.

Hi Daniela,
You may be able to if you have worked at least 5 of the last 10 years and have a record of paying into Social Security through payroll taxes.

Hi Tyler,

If you have worked in the past 10 years, you can try to apply for SSDI. For SSI, you will have to prove you income is under a very specific legal limit, as that is why most people are denied.

My younger brother (47) is living with me. I just turned 60 and i can't stand to be around him because he is an extreme alcoholic and he can't hold a job for longer than a month because he can't stay sober for very long. He has been to at least 6 rehabs. Does he qualify for some kind of disability?

Hi Patricia,

If he has no other disabling conditions and it's just because of alcoholism, then unfortunately he would not be eligible for SSD benefits.

Hi Diane,

If you believe that it will force you to be out of work for at least 12 months, you could qualify for SSDI benefits.

My son was approved for ssdi when he was 12 yr and received it until e he was about 16yrs at age 13yr his father took over custody of him I don't no why his ssdi payments quit my guess would be his father did not follow thru with requirements of social security so they closed his case now he has moved back in with me his mother and there has been no improvement in his condition it has even gotten worse my question is do I start over from the begaining and reapply or is there somthing else I can do to get back on his ssdi payments

Hi Annette,

Your son was likely receiving SSI, which is income based. If the dad's household income was above the limit then your son's benefit would have stopped. You can visit your local SSA office (make an appointment first) to see if it's possible to get reinstated before attempting to start all over.

Is there a requirement when the credits are accumulated for example the last 8 years of work? I am 55 and I have 36 credits. 14 credits for the last 8 years. Can I apply for disability?
