CAN I WORK AND STILL RECEIVE SSDI?

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on

I RECEIVE SSDI DUE TO A PERMANTLY DISSABLED RIGHT ARM AND HAND (THAT IS WHY I TYPE IN ALL CAPS, I.E., ITS EASIER); I HAVE SEVERE BACK PAIN AND I HAVE DIFFICULTY WALKING AS A RESULT OF A BROKEN NECK (FRACTURE OF C5 & C6). I STILL WANT TO WORK THOUGH... DOING WHAT, I DON'T KNOW. CAN I WORK AND RECEIVE SSDI AND IS THERE AN INCOME LIMIT? GRANT FROM GEORGIA.

Hi there,
I really could not say, but if the SSA determines that you have completed a trial work period, you may still be eligible for benefits for months that you earn under 1,170 a month.

Hi!
From what i have recently learned i am close to qualifying for Social Security Disability Benefits. However I am married. So does my husband's income factor in to my qualification for Benefits?

Hi Kim,

Your husband's income does not factor into qualifying for SSDI benefits.

Hi Elizabeth,
If you're on SSI benefits, you may have a reduction of one dollar for every two dollars that you earn.

I have used my trial work period up and I went back on full disability because I had to have brain surgery in 2008. I have a chance to get a 20hr a week job making 9.50 cents an hour. Would my social security disability benefits be affected by doing a small job like this.

Hi Richard,
It may not, but it's a good idea to contact a local SSA office about your case as they can give detailed information about your case.

Hi Melissa,

It might be possible to do some work as long as your monthly income doesn't exceed the 2017 SGA limit.

My daughter has bipolar and is drawing disability. She is having a hard time making ends meet on what she gets a month. Can she work part time to help with finances? She lives alone and it is hard for her to meet her needs.

Hi Kathy,

She may be able to work part time, but her monthly income cannot exceed the 2017 SGA limit, if it does she could lose her SSI benefits.

Hi Lee,

She may be able to if you were married to the person for over ten years;
You are at least 62 years old;
You are currently unmarried; and
You are not eligible for a larger Social Security payment on your own record.

SS rep told me that i can earn up to $1170 per mo. Said if I stay under that amount that i will never be removed from my ssdi. Im 59 years old. been on ssdi for 14 years. However, Im reading about a trial work period cap of $840 that, if exceeded, will count as a 'trial work period'. All i want to do is earn extra income to pay bills. but am i going to get bounced off of ssdi in 9 months if i earn... say... $1000?

I am a Disabled single mother of 2 paying Mortgage, Bills, Car payments etc... I was told I could work as I was not making it on my social security Disability Benefits alone ($650 a month). I went to the local social security office to ask them if I could work to help ends meet and the lady said yes, so as long as I did not surpass the SGA amount of I believe at that time was $1060 a month. I stayed well below that amount all of the time that I worked, however, after about 6 months I was sent a letter from social security asking me for a review, at that time I did not worry about losing my Disability Benefits as I had consulted with Social Security to make sure my part time job would not affect my benefits as I could not risk losing them, however, after being reviewed and although I never surpassed the SGA amount I was told by Social Security my benefits were being terminated simply because they felt I could work... period. It had nothing to do with the SGA amount, they just simply FELT I could work and so my benefits were being stopped.

HI Maria,
I'm sorry to hear about that! Generally they would also base any decision about that on your own reporting, the nature of your condition, and what type of work that you are doing.

I am permanently Disabled. My disability condition is incurable as it has been since I was 8 years old, I had a specialist retest me to prove there were no changes in regards to my condition and asked him to write a letter to social security with my results, unfortunately, that didn't help much... :(

Ok, so, I'm trying to figure this out. I see these numbers of $840 or 1170 a month in earnings. Does that number include my benefits? I get 778 a month in SSDI. Does that mean I can only earn $392 a month?

Hi Justin,
That does not include your benefits, $840 is the amount that you would be able to earn while on disability without a change in benefits, and $1,170 is the amount of money per month that the SSA uses to determine if you are unable to work a substantial amount.
