Lump sum back payment

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on

I received two lump sum payments, but I have not spent all of the funds. I want to make a funeral arrangement and buy a car. How soon must I spend the lump sum payment.

Hi Stacy,

That seems like a long time in between payments, I would recommend speaking to someone at the SSA regarding that.

Hi Karli,
I really could not say, you may want to contact Walmart regarding their check cashing policies.

Hi George,
You may have receive an award letter in the mail, it will outline your benefits and it may also contain information regarding this. You may also want to contact the SSA at 1-800-772-1213.

Hi Sophie,
You may be able to do so! It's a good idea to contact your local SSA office regarding this as they'd be able to give you detailed information specific to your case about this.

Does back pay checks come in multiples? My son has only received a partial amount of what I expected him to receive.

Hi Shannan,
Yes, for SSI benefits, your child would receive back pay in installments six months apart.

I have permanent guardianship of a nephew who receives benefits due to his mother being disabled. He has no disabilities or special needs himself at all. We just received his back pay. Can some of this money be used to reimburse our past expenses of his portion of rent, utilities, groceries...etc?

I received surviver benefits at age 17 at age 21 I became approved for Ssi am I entitled to back pay also I did not choose which check to go with. I asked for lumb some I had been told no . Now I find a application for the same lum some I had been told im not able to have.
Who could have that access to taking money from mentally damaged people who they thought would not have friends to explain and help them from has been happening blindly to them. Mentally and emotionally I morn for what my life should have developed into instead social security have takin my freedom to choose by with holding what is rightfully mine. My father turns in his grave knowing that he has died an all that he has work for just in case he died so if one of his kid where faced with a illness he will be able to help his baby.

Hi Tomasena,
Unfortunately, you may not have been eligible for disability benefits prior to age 21, or you may have started benefits as soon as you were eligible.
