SSDI length of time for back pay?

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on

When I initially met with my attorney, I was told that back pay would go back one year from application, minus 5 months (I had already waited over 2 years to file because I was told I would have "full recovery" after my 2 fusion surgeries). I've received my acceptance letter but not my back pay yet, and during my search for more info on the process I came across a SSDI page stating that even if it takes 24 months for your claim to get approved, you can only receive pay for 12 months. Can anybody help clarify this for me please? Also, I have friends who received their back pay before or immediately after their approval letters (NY), but I've seen posts by people saying it took several months so I was wondering if there was a formula for when I can expect mine? I'm not looking to go on a spending spree, but I have a mortgage, car payment, property and school taxes, and children to feed and clothe as well as one in an expensive college. Thank you for taking the time to read this, and all input is appreciated.

Hi I was receiving Social Security because my father passed away and I was egible to get it until I was 18. But they stop it when I was 16. I'm due for back pay so how long does it take for me to receive it? I filed the claimed today and was awarded it.

Hi there,
Losing your toes does not qualify you for disability benefits. I doubt your daughter will qualify for any back pay at all.

Hi there,
You can file a claim for expedited back pay, but it will be challenging. You will need to state exactly why you need the income (visiting doctors, etc) and exactly how much the car payment costs, which it seems like you have.

Hi there,
Four years is a very long time to wait for back pay. It's possible that you were not approved for disability benefits at all.

Hi Maria,
I would recommend contacting the SSA! Your back pay should definitely be arriving soon, so hopefully you'll be able to pay off your bills shortly.

Good Afternoon, I been on disability from 09. I recently had a SSDI review couple of months ago. I was informed my mail that I was not disabled anymore and would be losing my benefits after the next two months. I did the appeal within the ten days period, so I can keep receiving my benefits until the appeal went threw its course. Next I went to the SSA office with the doctors update of my current medical condition and status. I did all this before the ten days, which running back and forth getting all the necessary documents while using a quad cane. I got everything taking care of. I receive a next letter within a month in the mail, saying that am still disable and everything will stay the same and there's nothing else needed to be done. Three months later, I check my SSA login and saw no deposit date. I got scared and the called SSA. I was told my case was suspend because I did not sign the waiver. I explain to the SSA representative this is not true and gave them confirming dates of when I did everything and as well as turning them in. The representative put me on a brief hold and then came back. The representative explain to me that I was correct and all the days I mention to her was correct and is confirmed in there system. The representative told me that everything is ok and a priority mail was sent to the payment center and all I need is to go back on current pay, which will take about 15 business days . I keep checking my log in because there's no update yet. I am very scared because am already disable, housebound, and received 2 transplants in the past. I have my own household and bills that is being affected my this matter. Especially, with this not being my fault because I provide everything, they asked for in a STAT approach. [ My question, is about how long does this process take and is there anything I can do because this has mess me up my livelihood drastically ?] Especially when I had to cancel my upcoming total hip replacement surgery, that I'm in dire of need for or I will end up confined to a wheelchair by the age 40. I'm only 35 and I believe I still have a long life ahead, with God prayer's and blessing . Bless Up !!!

Hi there,
I am very sorry to hear that! I am honestly not familiar with how long this process takes. I hope someone here has experience with how long the appeal process takes. With any luck you should hopefully get your benefits shortly.

I received my back pay for only 12 months, as I applied for ssdi two years ago. I had the impression that I would receive two years of back pay. Also is the back pay that I received, the same amount for monthly benefits.

Hi Josh,
This could be due to a matter of reasons. First off, the first five months of waiting to be approved are not entitled to back pay, so that leaves you with seven months. Additionally, the ALJ likely did not determine that you were disabled at the time you applied. This happens if you have a progressive illness like cancer or Parkinson's syndrome.

Hi Smith,
I am so sorry to hear that! I am afraid that there is not a lot we can do, as we are not affiliated with the SSA. Hopefully you can get the income you deserve quickly.
