Do I Qualify?

Submitted by Deanna on

I was just wondering if i were to qualify for social Security. I have Cerebal Palsey and epilepsy seziures. I recently turned 18 and my parents said i was able to collect social security since i was diagnosis at the age of 3. But they never did because they were my parents. But now since im growing up i think it would really help me out. I'm the only one in my family to have a disability with sezuires and epilepsy seziures. This is all new to my parents and I so i would very much appreciate the help. Please and thank you!

Hi Miranda, Both schizoaffective disorder and diabetes can qualify you for SSI, depending on how much the disorders affect your life. You'll need to have strong support from doctors and/or therapists saying that you'll be unable to perform any form of gainful activity due to your disabilities. Feel free to read more about diabetes and mental disorders on our site.

Hi Jerry,
I am so sorry to hear that you'll need such major surgery! Hip replacement doesn't usually qualify you for SSDI benefits, but since you're getting both hips replaced, I believe your case is different. Feel free to read more about hip replacement and SSD benefits here.
I think you'd have a good shot at qualifying due to your lack of mobility. If you have any interest in speaking with an attorney about your claim, you can take our Free Disability Evaluation.
An attorney can boost your chances of winning the claim to up to 90%, so if you do decide to file for disability, keep the option in mind! Attorneys are also free if you lose your case, so don't worry about expenses. If you win, they typically receive 25% of your back pay.

Hi Max,
I am sorry to hear about all of your recent troubles. If you'd like to try working but still need to receive disability benefits, you can attempt a work trial. To qualify for a work trial, you'll need to be approved for SSDI benefits. If you aren't sure if you can qualify, you can take our Free Disability Evaluation to speak with an attorney in your area. Good luck.

I am receiving sad benefits and from that my son whose 16 is getting a small amount also. My question is, my son has chronic migraines can he qualify for disability or would it not make a difference being he's getting something from me?

Hi Kris,
I would recommend at least applying for your son if his disabilities are severe enough to impact his life in such a way that he cannot work. This is because he will be cut off of your benefits after he turns 18, but if he is found disabled before age 22, he will still be able to receive benefits from you as an "Adult Child." Migraines are difficult to prove disability, but you can read more about them here: http://www.disability-benefits-help.org/disabling-conditions/chronic-mi…

I had a bone removed in my foot. After therapy I went back to work but I have pain everyday because my job I have to do a lot of walking. At this point the pain is making me depressed.

Hi Pamela,
It's possible that you could get disability benefits. Because a disability like this is not listed in the SSA's blue book, which is the medical guide the SSA uses to evaluate all disabilities, so you will need to prove how your foot pain keeps you from preforming all kinds of gainful activity. If at your current job you do a lot of walking but it's possible for you to have a different job that fits your skill set but does not have as much walking, you could potentially not qualify for benefits. Be sure to be very thorough when you describe your symptoms and pain in your disability application.

I'm a 51 year old woman and have been a homemaker my whole adult life. I have several disabilities both physical and mental which prevents me from being able to work. Do I qualify? My husband earns a very good living but has total control of our finances?

Hi there,
Unfortunately, if you've been a homemaker and have not paid FICA taxes, you will not qualify for SSDI benefits. If your husband makes a "very good" living you will definitely not qualify for SSI either, as the household maximum income for a couple applying for SSI is $1,100 per month.

Do I qualify for ssi if I'm only 4'5" tall?

Hi Andrea,
Most likely, no. Height alone is not a disabling condition listed by the SSA. You would need some other thing that disables you, such as mental impairments or muscular issues.

Hi there,
How did you write that sentence if you cannot read?
You cannot qualify for SSDI because you haven't worked in the last 30 years, but you could qualify for SSI.

I was just diagnosed with anxiety and low grade depression by my mental health clinic. And on top of that I have high blood pressure. Ive been having a hard time going in to work whether its from the high bp or from the anxiety. I was wondering if I qualify for disability?

Hi Matthew,
It is very, very hard to get disability benefits for depression and anxiety. High blood pressure is also a challenging case to win. I would not recommend applying for disability benefits unless you have been diagnosed with a mental disability for at least two years. You will also need to show that you have been taking medication for your illnesses and that the medication has not helped.

I have Degenerative disk DDD, high blood pressure, ADHD, Anxiety, learning disability documented since elementary school.central Disk protrusions at l5 s1. Chronic back pain, can't stay focused. Trouble completing task. Short term memory problems. Sciatica, hypogonadism low T, muscle spasms, fatigue, dizziness, mood swings and panic attacks. Weakness and numbness in left leg. Right arm. What are my chances of getting SSD. I have enough work credits. My conditions are getting worse. I've only worked a few months this year. I just can't do the job I once could. And with the medication I take I'm at a high risk for an accident. I don't know what to do. I've never let my disabilities get the best of me. This year has just been a bad year for me. I'd rather work. I tried doing light duty for a week. But 4-5 hour of sitting was all I could take. Sometimes less.
