CAN I WORK AND STILL RECEIVE SSDI?

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on

I RECEIVE SSDI DUE TO A PERMANTLY DISSABLED RIGHT ARM AND HAND (THAT IS WHY I TYPE IN ALL CAPS, I.E., ITS EASIER); I HAVE SEVERE BACK PAIN AND I HAVE DIFFICULTY WALKING AS A RESULT OF A BROKEN NECK (FRACTURE OF C5 & C6). I STILL WANT TO WORK THOUGH... DOING WHAT, I DON'T KNOW. CAN I WORK AND RECEIVE SSDI AND IS THERE AN INCOME LIMIT? GRANT FROM GEORGIA.

Hi There,

As long as you make less than $850 a month, you will not be part of the TWP. Once you make more than $850 that month will be considered as part of the TWP.

Hi Juanita,

The number of hours does not matter, but if you earn more than $850 per month; that could trigger a trial work period.

Hi Denae,

You can make up to $850 ($800 to be on the safe side) a month before entering the TWP if you are SSDI. So, the $200 should not affect your SSDI.

I have small cell lung cancer and am on ssdi now for 4 months, before this was diagnosed I own my own business on my own property. Can I still work this business? I can't do what I use to do but I can't pay all my bills on what I receive, and I can't expect my family to continue to help me with the bills

I'm on disability both kids have aged out and we are losing the 650 we were receiving even though we spent the money on them it did help cover living expenses. Have a opportunity to be a ranger at a golf course which will not come close to the 800 dollar limit does this need to be reported. I'm not physically able to do manual labor of any kind and this is just a few hours a day 3 days a week. Thanks for your input on this

I am on sdi for 17 years now start working 9 hours a week @ $11.50 an hour next week. My husband was deported he always paid the rent and now I need to make up for that. I will only bring in $500 a month will my sdi Money get lowered? Can I work more past the 9 month trial? Will I lose my benefits if I do?

Hi Lisa,

You should be okay if you are making only $500 a month while on SSDI. The Trial Work Period is if you make over $850 a month.

I have a chance to be an extra on a movie my son is working on. I think they are paying us but not sure. Do
I need to report this to SSI? If I get paid it will not be that much money. Do I report it now or during tax season. Its just a one time job.

I am 65 years old. I have been on social security disability since I was 58 years old. Cost of living and insurances are killing me. Plus rent and electric. If for some reason I get a part time job would I loose my disability. I think after medical insurance I clear $ 1277.00 monthly. I have Humana. What amount could I make but not loose my benefit??

Hi Robert,

I would recommend speaking with a SSA representative regarding that. By going back to work, you could trigger a work trial period from the SSA.

I've been collecting ssdi for quite some time now. I'd really like to start trying to work. I was offered a job about 12 hrs a week. It's at 10 dollars in hr. So I'd make no where near gainful employment. Can I go on doing this indefinitely? Or would this be considered a ticket to work thing. I know I probably won't be able to be very successful but just want to try but I'm terrifed.

Hi Katie,

You are only considered to be part of the Trial Work Period if you make over $850 a month. If you make less than that, it won't be considered part of the TWP and should not impact your benefits.

I just got approved for ssdi. My part time job said they will let me work when I'm feeling up to it. Up to 20 hours a week. Will this affect my ssdi. It depends on how well i feel, that i work. Thanks

Hi Lori,

The amount of hours don't matter, it's all about how much you earn in a month. If you earn more than $740/month, it could trigger a trial work period.
