SSDI length of time for back pay?

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on

When I initially met with my attorney, I was told that back pay would go back one year from application, minus 5 months (I had already waited over 2 years to file because I was told I would have "full recovery" after my 2 fusion surgeries). I've received my acceptance letter but not my back pay yet, and during my search for more info on the process I came across a SSDI page stating that even if it takes 24 months for your claim to get approved, you can only receive pay for 12 months. Can anybody help clarify this for me please? Also, I have friends who received their back pay before or immediately after their approval letters (NY), but I've seen posts by people saying it took several months so I was wondering if there was a formula for when I can expect mine? I'm not looking to go on a spending spree, but I have a mortgage, car payment, property and school taxes, and children to feed and clothe as well as one in an expensive college. Thank you for taking the time to read this, and all input is appreciated.

Hi there,
The SSA generally sends out back pay four months after you start receiving monthly benefits.

Hi Johnnie,
I really could not say as every case is different, but it sounds like you'd get your benefits in two weeks!

I have 4.5 years of back pay I am waiting for, my approval was 4 months ago, It went to the payment center, the judge stopped it because the attorney asked for to much. Now it is in the distribution center for deposit ? I was told it would be in my account in 1 to 2 weeks, it has been a month and still nothing :( what is the distribution center ?

Hi Rob,
The distribution center is where the SSA disburses funds. I'm sorry to hear about that, but it sometimes takes longer due to issues like this.

I just received my daughters disability award letter. At the interview her caseworker stated that she would be receiving backpay but she couldn't tell me the amount. On the award letter, there was no mention of backpay...does this mean that she is not receiving it? Filed in May...her benefits will begin in Dec

Hi Taryn,
I really could not say as I don't really have all the specifics, but it may be a good idea to contact the SSA regarding this, they may have made an error if your child is due back pay.

I first applied for SSI in November 1997, denied repeatedly. Had court in September 2016 and the judge stated I've been disabled since 1997 to present. Does that mean I'll get backpay from them?

Hi Bridget,
You may be eligible for back pay from the time of your Established Onset Date, in some cases.

HI there,
It depends on which benefit you are receiving, but SSDI benefits have a five month waiting period for them to start.

I had my ssdi hearing on sept 13,2016, i've been waiting to receive any type of letter from SSDI, but havent heard anything. I tried calling and they ask me for a confimation # which i never recieved, i dont know where i am in this or how much longer i have to wait to find out? Also where can i obtain a confirmation #, i searched every bit of paperwork i have for this claim, i filed in person and had a ss agent file for me....

I go on there everyday to see if i can even see the amount i would receive (if apporved) shows up, but there is nothing there. It says not available on amount i would receive and when i click on that it says it cant be shown because i resently applied for SSDI and/or medicare. There is nothing on there about confirmation numbers either??? Im just lost
