When I initially met with my attorney, I was told that back pay would go back one year from application, minus 5 months (I had already waited over 2 years to file because I was told I would have "full recovery" after my 2 fusion surgeries). I've received my acceptance letter but not my back pay yet, and during my search for more info on the process I came across a SSDI page stating that even if it takes 24 months for your claim to get approved, you can only receive pay for 12 months. Can anybody help clarify this for me please? Also, I have friends who received their back pay before or immediately after their approval letters (NY), but I've seen posts by people saying it took several months so I was wondering if there was a formula for when I can expect mine? I'm not looking to go on a spending spree, but I have a mortgage, car payment, property and school taxes, and children to feed and clothe as well as one in an expensive college. Thank you for taking the time to read this, and all input is appreciated.
go to the Social Security office and tell them you need the money for whatever reason and you can get it all in one lump sum that's what I did

Hi Karen,
Thanks for sharing! It's important to have a good reason for the lump sum for SSI as they would need proof that it's for dire need.
I applied for SSDI back in January 3,2015, after so many deniel I finally was approved December, 2017, but the judge change the onset date that I became disabled on October 26, 2015, wish is crazy cause due to my disability I haven’t been able to work sene November 2014, I had all kind of crazy symptoms, almost paralyzed due to a dramatic civicle compression that wasn’t discovered until February 2016. Single mom of three kids and my house on Forclosure, in the interview they asked me how did I pay my bills, I told them the truth that I haven’t been able to pay my mortgage and most of the time me and my kids was with out light and water , that my brother would lend me money here and their but it wasn’t a gift, but money I agree to pay back, well they took that information and ran with it and put in the system as income , so my back pay benefits was only $470 instead of the full amount. My brother wrote a letter explaining that it wasn’t a gift and that it was a loan. I need to bring my mortgage up to date, so I won’t lose the house and I need to pay my brother back cause I feel really bad that this has happened, my question is can I appeal this , I’m already appealing the onsete date, but can they do this or is this is something I can appeal. These last three years has been a very bad for my teenager, it has really taken a tole on them , being the kids on the block with the water or lights always disconnected. Thank God I finally got approved, but if someone as the answer to my question, can they count the money I received as a loan that I have to pay back as an income and deducted from my back pay?

Hi Maggie,
You may want to have documentation of the loan from your brother to you, such as a promissory note.

I had the small amount put into my checking and taken back out does this mean my checks will start soon? If so what's the wait time now.

Hi there,
they may have made the small deposit to confirm that that is your bank account, I could not say that it is an indication that your checks will start soon.

It may not be illegal for them to do so, however you may want to contact the SSA with documentation of your need for the money, for example an eviction or collections notice.

Hi Debby,
I really could not say, you may want to contact the SSA regarding this. Generally they would send back pay around four months after you start receiving benefits.

Back pay for SSDI is paid out in a lump sum about four months after you start receiving monthly benefits.
I filed my initial disability claim on 08/2013, and I was denied on all my appeals, that lasted until 03/2016. I filed a new claim on 06/2017 and was approved at the Reconsideration stage 01/2018, but the Appeals Council stated that I could use 01/2016 as my onset date. How will my back pay be calculated?
In reply to I filed my initial disability by Calvin (not verified)
Hi Calvin,
Your back pay would be calculated by your current onset date of 01/2016
Ok. I started seeing my Dr in 14. Applied for disability 7/2015. Had appeal 1/2018. Judge said he put in for my disability. Ok the lawyer said my Dr records only had actual info from 7/16. Not sure why bc I seen him for the 2 years prior.so my lawyer had me sign a paper of onset from 7/16 he said bc when I applied my onst date was from 2014 but no records so I had to put 7/16. But I applied a yr before that. How does that work with backpay. My social worker friend said it would go to 7/15. But I googled it and couldn't find an actual answer.

Hi there,
You may receive back pay from your established onset date.
Hi everyone, I apply many times and have given up, cause filling out papers gets to me, I have a problem with y tail bone that I can’t sit too long and other health problems. My question is I became disabled on September 23 2017- I got a call from social security telling me I was awarded for social security disability then I was told I am going to get a letter confirming this, so I did, and it said I will be getting only 389.00 on April for surviving March, and May and June and so on. The I called them to find out if I will receive retroactive (back payment) I was told Nope cause the law. New rules. Just wondering if this is true cause the person I spoke to didn’t bother to check anything.

It’s been 90 days since my disability hearing (in Nashville Tennessee)I’ve not heard anything my lawyer felt the judge was leaning toward a partially favorable decision? What is average wait time? I’ve not had a steady job since 2014 and no income at all since middle of 2015 thanks for any info you can provide

Hi Candy,
I could not say, you may want to contact the SSA regarding your case. Wait times can vary as every case is different.
In reply to Hi Candy, by Bryan
If a partially favorable decision what onset date would be best guess at what the judge will go by ? First onset listed 10/2015, or the date the social security interviewer suggested based on my employment longevity of11/2014 or the date I turned “55” ? Which was in 2017

Hi Candy,
There are many factors that determine an onset date, I could not say what yours would be as we don't have any information on your case as we are not affiliated with the SSA.

All of that information should be in the letter you receive once a decision is made! You just may not have received it yet if it is still processing.
I applied in 2015 when I literally crawled up 3 flights of stairs after work. Due to arthritis and back pain. I was turned down because I tried to work. I applied again in 2017 because I couldn't work and pain was too great. I received a call from SSDI that I was now approved but would only get payment for 2018 not 2015. How is that right?
