Lump sum back payment

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on

I received two lump sum payments, but I have not spent all of the funds. I want to make a funeral arrangement and buy a car. How soon must I spend the lump sum payment.

Hi Jill,
I'm sorry to hear about that. It may be a good idea to contact the SSA with some documentation of your hardships, they may be able to expedite your back pay because of that.

I am owed 40,000 in back pay from SSD and they automatically applied me for ssi (i told them I didnt want to apply for it)...got a letter from ssi stating that i was approved up to a certain date and SSi owe me 15,000 in back pay. How will they calculate to total amount in all owed to me in back payment and would I get it in a lump some? Can someone please help me figure this out?

Hi there,
It may be a good idea to contact the SSA as they can better explain the interaction between SSDI and SSI back pay.

Hi Rose,
If you are approved, you may qualify for back pay from the time you have applied.

When you get a 2199 payment do you still receive your normal monthly benefit also

Hi Cherly,
If a 2199 payment is an income-based payment, then you may not be able to receive regular SSI payments at the same time.

Hi Henry,
I'm sorry, but we are not affiliated with the SSA and as such would not be able to help you with the deposit of your check. You may want to call the SSA at 1-800-772-1213 to have them help you further.

Hi there,
The SSA may only pay backpay from their Established Onset Date, rather than the Alleged onset date.

Hi Kandy,
Deposit times may vary from bank to bank, and may also depend on the amount of the back pay being disbursed.

Hi Kerry,
You need to set up a dedicated account. It may be a good idea to contact your caseworker to figure out what the best way to say the money for your son could be, they can give you the best advice regarding maintaining eligibility.
