Lump sum back payment

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on Mon, 09/26/2011 - 13:04

I received two lump sum payments, but I have not spent all of the funds. I want to make a funeral arrangement and buy a car. How soon must I spend the lump sum payment.

Hi Ray,
SSI recipients are not eligible for benefits if they have over 2,000 in financial resources and assets, so if not spending benefits leads someone to be over that amount, they may lose benefits.

Hi Ray,
Financial resource limits apply to SSI recipients but not SSDI recipients.

Hi I receive SSI benefits for my son and received the 1 of 3 back separated back payments in Feb. The letter said every 6 months I would receive another payment. This is month 6 and nothing yet. Is there a specific date for it. He needs certain things and it really stressing me that they are playing these waiting games instead of just giving all of what is owed.

Hi Gabby,
It may be a good idea to contact the SSA with documentation about your child's issues, they can get the money to you faster if there is a documented need for it.

Hi Rose,
If you've got an urgent situation requiring the SSA to take action, then yes, you may be able to get disability benefits that quickly.

You may not be able to as you may only be eligible for back pay from the time you apply, rather than from when you first became eligible.

Hi there,
If you are in control of your mother's funds, it may be a better idea to open a dedicated amount to deposit that money, rather than cashing it.

I received my awards letter june10 2016. My back pay letter came shortly afterward. Prior to that I became homeless and borrowed money to keep my car and basically survive. My local office has provided a few low payments but not enough to pay back and find a place to live. It took the judge over 6 mo to make her decision. My local office will not help me anymore in fact they wanted an itemized list of what I spent the money on and said they would seek an executor to handle my money. I am a 61 ur old female w/bipolar disorder and other mental disorders but all I am trying to do is make my payments. By next week I will lose electric and hot water can not make my car payments so I will not be able to attend self help groups or dr appointments. I received the back pay in early June. Can u please hp me . . I am asking if everyone could put this as their status for 1 hour. I'm pretty sure I know the ones that will. Think of someone you know or love who has or has had MS. My hope is that in 2016 a cure will be found. Will you post it for 1 hour? To honor those who have fought or are fighting Multiple Sclerosis. To copy & Paste, simply hold your finger on the text and hit "copy" then go to where you'd post a status update, hold your finger on the screen and hit "paste".

Thank you to all of those who copy and paste this on their status!

Hi Cherly,
If a 2199 payment is an income-based payment, then you may not be able to receive regular SSI payments at the same time.

Hi Kerry,
You need to set up a dedicated account. It may be a good idea to contact your caseworker to figure out what the best way to say the money for your son could be, they can give you the best advice regarding maintaining eligibility.
