I have children and their father has recently went for a hearing is waiting on a decision. I was told that the kids will qualify for benefits. I have several questions.
How is the amount determined?
What are the rules for the cutoff age to recieve benefits?
Do the children recieve back pay as well?
What steps if any do I need to take to set up their case?
If a child is 18 but still in high school do they qualify, and for how long?
I am wondering if my daughters father receives disability and she gets a check from him because she has his last name. If I change her last name to my last name will she still receive that check from her father's disability??

Hi Sheila,
The SSA may not take the individual's name into account, but rather the relation of the eligible worker to their child as criteria for benefits eligibility.
I am on SSDI and my grand daughter lives with us full time and is our dependent. Can she receive benefits since she is our dependent?

She may be able to, however you may need to legally adopt your grandchild in order for her to be eligible for benefits based off of your work record.
Hello, I receive ssdi. My daughter receives it ad well. Her mother recently stop letting me see her. Is there a way I can get the benefit sent to me or taken off to make sure i can see her?

I'm sorry to hear about that, but I do not think that the SSA would allow you to cancel your child's benefits or re-assign the representative payee because of your situation.

You may have to legally adopt your grandchild for them to be eligible for benefits.
I was approved for my disability since June of 2011, but in my paper works I did not include that I am in the process of adapting my granddaughter, year 2013 I was granted and approved by the court that I finally adapt may granddaughter as my daughter , do I qualified to enroll her now and can j receive a back pay since 2013 up to know..

I am unsure as to the status of back pay, however your granddaughter may be eligible for benefits based on your work record.
I work with a family who is adopting a child. The child was receiving RSDI benefits from his biological grandfather. The child is being adopted by a foster parent. Can the child continue to receive benefits from his grandfather?

Hi Shannon,
You may want to speak with an SSA representative as they may be better able to help, but generally the criteria is that if a child may inherit property from someone without being named in a will, then they may be eligible for benefits.
I am disabled and collect SS. I'm adopting my grandson. He is 18 months now. He has always lived with us. Will I be able to get back pay or will it start at the adoption?

We cannot provide that information as we are not affiliated with the SSA and would not have that information. However, if your children's father receives SSDI benefits, the children may be eligible for benefits based off of his work record.
I am receiving SSI and I am have been declared disabled since December of 2014, even though I am divorced and do not have residential custody of my children I was wondering will they be able to have any help with college? Or how does this work or does it at all? Thank you , Heather

Hi Heather,
Unfortunately, SSI benefits do not provide any extra benefits for dependents.
My granddaughter has lived with me her whole life. We are adopting her. We already have a court date. I collect disability. I know I can sign her up as my dependent and get a check but will I get any back pay for the past time she has been in our care ?

Yes, your grandchild, once adopted, may be eligible for back pay from the time of your Established Onset Date.
