CAN I WORK AND STILL RECEIVE SSDI?

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on

I RECEIVE SSDI DUE TO A PERMANTLY DISSABLED RIGHT ARM AND HAND (THAT IS WHY I TYPE IN ALL CAPS, I.E., ITS EASIER); I HAVE SEVERE BACK PAIN AND I HAVE DIFFICULTY WALKING AS A RESULT OF A BROKEN NECK (FRACTURE OF C5 & C6). I STILL WANT TO WORK THOUGH... DOING WHAT, I DON'T KNOW. CAN I WORK AND RECEIVE SSDI AND IS THERE AN INCOME LIMIT? GRANT FROM GEORGIA.

Hi Justin,
That does not include your benefits, $840 is the amount that you would be able to earn while on disability without a change in benefits, and $1,170 is the amount of money per month that the SSA uses to determine if you are unable to work a substantial amount.

Hi. I want to know how to go about doing everything the right legal way. I am disabled and have been since 2014. I want to start back work to see what I can do, and if I can do it. I plan to work about 3 4hour shifts per week, which will be about $700-800 in income (maybe less) a month. How do I go about this the right way? Also, I am assuming I should call SSDI and let them know, but if I let them know that I am going back, working short shifts and few shifts, will my SSDI stop? I am so afraid of losing my benefits that I think it keeps me from trying. Like I said the additional amount earned per month GROSS is 700-800 per month, so I am not going to be above SGA.

Hi Mark,

You should report any additional income to the SSA. You are able to work and still in on Social Security benefits. However, if your total monthly income including your Social Security benefits is over the 2017 SGA lmit, it could affect your benefits.

So if my monthly check from SSDI is 1225.00 what am I able to earn in addition to that where I won't be above SGA?

Hi Mark,
For SSDI, you would be able to earn up to $840 a month without triggering the trial work period rules for that month.

Hi there,
There is no set amount of hours that you would be able to work and still receive benefits.

Hi Jaime,
You may want to reach out to support groups in your community, if your family can help, that may be a good idea as well.

Hi David,
You may not, but it's always a good idea to contact the SSA regarding changes in income.

I am going back to work soon. However I will only be able to start out by working maybe to 4 hour shifts a week. What's that earning will be well under the $840 limit. Hopefully I can eventually work my way up to more hours as I can tolerate them. My main concern is what keeps me from losing my benefits during the time where I'm making below SGA? I want to try to go back to work and see what I can do but by doing that I don't want to lose my benefits. I know that if I start to make above $840 that that will initiate a free trial work period month and I'm okay with that. I am just worried that while I am working a small amount of hours and earning below $840 a month if I will lose my benefits and what protects me from losing them? Also how long after your trial work period can I keep Medicare part A and B? If I start work I know I will need to report that to the Social Security Administration which I'm fine with but what prevents them from auditing my case right then and there? I think there are people out there who want to test their ability and work and get back into the workforce but it is terrifying the thought that we may lose our benefits and still end up to where we can support ourselves because of our disability. I would really appreciate an informative answer on these questions please. I just want to feel better about my decision to try to test my abilities and enter back into the workforce. Your time and assistance is greatly appreciated. Thank you very much!

I am on ssdi and need more money to pay bills. ......I know the limit is 1170 a month for sga on ssdi....I make between 990 and 1150 a month at my part time job. ...ssa is now telling me that this way too high and I need to pay back the last two years and lose all benefits. ....I know the ssi limits are lower than ssdi......but I'm on ssdi not ssi....I thought I was following the rules where are they coming from?

Hi Ethan,
While the SSA does allow people to work while receiving SSI or SSDI benefits, you may have become ineligible some time in the past and as such the SSA is seeking money to recoup its overpayment.

I receive Survivor's benefits for my son and I, how much can I earn if I go back to work? I haven't worked since 2012... I can't afford to lose any of my benefits. I'm hoping to supplement my current income. Thank you
