CAN I WORK AND STILL RECEIVE SSDI?

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on

I RECEIVE SSDI DUE TO A PERMANTLY DISSABLED RIGHT ARM AND HAND (THAT IS WHY I TYPE IN ALL CAPS, I.E., ITS EASIER); I HAVE SEVERE BACK PAIN AND I HAVE DIFFICULTY WALKING AS A RESULT OF A BROKEN NECK (FRACTURE OF C5 & C6). I STILL WANT TO WORK THOUGH... DOING WHAT, I DON'T KNOW. CAN I WORK AND RECEIVE SSDI AND IS THERE AN INCOME LIMIT? GRANT FROM GEORGIA.

Hi Tiffany,
Survivor's benefits are not based on income, so you may not have a limit on income through work.

Hi, I have a civil service pension (fire dept non-disability) and also receive SSDI from a later injury on another job. Can I still work a job where I will earn about $600 per month. I just wondered whether my pension will work against me as earning too much..

Hi Seamus,
Pensions may not be considered "earned income" for the purposes of determining work income by the SSA.

I am on SSID and I also have a 19 year Son with Special Needs who now receives SSID as an adult. I have full Guardianship over him now.
1. I have a problem where they took Medicaid away and placed him on Share of Coast because they are combining both his and my Disability payments. I thought they could not do that. He's an Adult with a Disability and so am I. It should be completely separate. One person said due to the fact that he lives with me. I said it should not matter I was appointed his Guardian and he pays expenses which I account for every year. What can I do.

2. Also my Son even with his Mental Disabilaity. He loves to draw. There is a program that encouraged him to Sell his Drawings. How would that affect his SSID? If he just Sold a few. Or they suggested I promote his drawings online. I am a Single Mother struggling and it's confusing.

3. I just received a noticed that they will be putting my Son on Medicare A anod B which is what I have. That means his benefits will be much less. He receives $883

Thank you in advance.

Hi there,
1. You may want to contact the office in your state that administers Medicaid, as eligibility varies by state. Additionally, they may have started to determine his benefits as an adult because he is over 18, which may change the criteria they use for eligibility.
2. His benefits may not be affected by selling a few paintings, however, if he makes over $840 a month doing so he may trigger a trial work period. You can find out more here:
https://www.disability-benefits-help.org/glossary/trial-work-period
3. You may want to contact the SSA regarding this, as your child may be eligible to be a Qualified Medicare Beneficiary, which can lower the amount he would need to pay in Medicare premiums. you can call them at 1-800-772-1213.

Hi there,
I can't really say, if you're receiving income-based benefits rather than benefits based off of your work record, your benefits may be affected.

Hi there,
If you're unsure of what benefits you receive, you may want to contact the SSA as they would know.

HI Joe,
If your child is receiving benefits based off of your SSDI rather than income-based SSI benefits, you may not have asset limits. It may be a good idea to contact the SSA regarding this.

Hi, I am scheduled to start receiving SSDI in Jan 2018. I wondered if I am also eligible for the 5% increase to take effect in Jan. Thanks...
