CAN I WORK AND STILL RECEIVE SSDI?

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on

I RECEIVE SSDI DUE TO A PERMANTLY DISSABLED RIGHT ARM AND HAND (THAT IS WHY I TYPE IN ALL CAPS, I.E., ITS EASIER); I HAVE SEVERE BACK PAIN AND I HAVE DIFFICULTY WALKING AS A RESULT OF A BROKEN NECK (FRACTURE OF C5 & C6). I STILL WANT TO WORK THOUGH... DOING WHAT, I DON'T KNOW. CAN I WORK AND RECEIVE SSDI AND IS THERE AN INCOME LIMIT? GRANT FROM GEORGIA.

My husband has COPD and is in the final stages, he has a very good job makes good money and is highly prized at work. I would like him to apply for SSDI and he said he is unable to receive this because he would have to quit his job and he makes to much money. Is there any truth to this? Is one expected to die working because they make too much money? this doesn't sound d right he (and his employer) put this money into this program it shouldn't be just for the poor. What's the truth?

Hi Laura,

So he wouldn't be denied because he makes too much money. He would be denied because he is still working. SSDI is for applicants who can no longer work due to their disabling condition.

Hi there,
In 2018, you would be able to earn up to $850 a month without a change in benefits.

If I receive $2300 a month SSDI, how much will my wife get next July when she turns 62. She is eligible for $1000 on her own, but will she get half of mine ($1150) since it is more? TIA

Hi Kent,
She may be eligible to receive half of yours, but you may want to contact the SSA to confirm. You can contact them at 1-800-772-1213.

Ok I was over the SGA in 2016 & 2017 I will receive my benefits 1/24/18 but I'm sure they will hold the February benefit. How much will I have to pay the SSA back? I'm only working part time

Hi Laura,
I could not say, you may want to contact the SSA regarding this if there was an overpayment.

Hi There,

If you are the divorced spouse of a worker who has passed away, you could still be eligible for survivors benefits if the marriage lasted 10 years or more.

However, if you remarry before the age of 60, you cannot collect survivors benefits (unless the later marriage ends for any reason).

I am on disability for mental illness. I receive $1012 a month. I live in Minnesota. I have been offered a part time job, how much can I make a month if I am able to do the job?

Hi Nicole,
It would depend on the disability benefits that you are receiving. If you are receiving SSDI, you would be able to make up to $850 a month, and if you are receiving SSI benefits, then you would have a reduction in benefits that is roughly one dollar for every two that you earn.

If I get ssdi as a single woman, and recently find out I was never divorced, now what happens to me?

Hi There,

Your SSDI is based on your own record, not income so nothing will happen actually. It will stay the same.
