Qualifying children

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on

I have children and their father has recently went for a hearing is waiting on a decision. I was told that the kids will qualify for benefits. I have several questions.
How is the amount determined?
What are the rules for the cutoff age to recieve benefits?
Do the children recieve back pay as well?
What steps if any do I need to take to set up their case?
If a child is 18 but still in high school do they qualify, and for how long?

Hi there,
Your grandson would be eligible for benefits if his parents were either dead or disabled or if you had legally adopted your grandchild.

Hi Lisapeach,
Your daughter may still be eligible for auxiliary benefits based off of her father's record even if she lives with you.

Hi Kristy,
I'm not sure what amount they would be eligible to receive, but your living situation ( that is, who is paying for housing, utilities, ect.) is factored into the SSA's eligibility decisions.

My grandson's mother has been getting survivor's benefits since my son died and DCF may be placed in DCF custody with a family member. The caregiver will receive money from DCF until the cold is placed back with his mother. What happens to the ss check? Does DCF get it, the caregiver? Or the mother who still has to maintain the home/pay rent?

Hi Sandy,
It should go to whoever is caring for the child, but unless the SSA is notified of the housing change, it will likely continue to be sent to the mother.

My boyfriend of 17 yrs was approved for social security disability and has been receiving checks for 6 months now. He went 3 months ago to fill out paperwork because he was told our daughter would get auxiliary benefits. When he called to check the status of her benefits, they told him it was sent to the payment center 8 weeks ago and that they don't know anything else. How long does it take to receive benefits after it's sent to the payment center?

Hi Rachel,
It generally takes five months from the time of approval to start receiving benefits.

Hi Sharell,
I am sorry to hear that. Because he is on SSI benefits, your daughter will not be entitled to any benefits.

Hi there,
If you are a college student over the age of 18, you will not be able to receive any auxiliary benefits under your father's account.

Hi Charlotte,
I believe you will need to go to your local SSA office to have the payments sent to the mother instead of your account if you are no longer taking care of the child.

I don't know if my child father is receiving ssdi, I called the local social security office ,made an appointment. They wouldn't tell me if my childs father was receiving benefits, but they said when I come to my appointment to bring bank routing number.does that mean my son's father is receiving benefits.
