Kidney transplant

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on

I am 52 years old and have been disabled for 8 years due to renal failure. My question is, since I have had a kidney transplant, does my social security benefits end. If so when, because there is always a chance of rejection. If it does end, I do not want to be taken by surprise, will they let you know early enough, or will it be oneof those deals where they just cut you off, then inform you that you are no longer eligible?

thank you, I'll look into it. I was curious if I was eligible or not. I'm 33 and work as a CNA in a rehabilitation center, and I'm not rushing to get back to having to lift patients. I also have back pain that doesn't go away and chronic anemia

Hi Charley,
I really could not say as we do not have the medical expertise necessary to say how the HPV virus would affect a kidney transplant.

I am 42 years old and started dialysis last year. I applied for disability and was approved for SSD but not for Medicare, is that usual? I just had a kidney transplant 5 months ago and I am struggling Getting an affordable medical insurance due to an excess of income from SSD.

Hi Sarah,
You may be able to do so, however it may require an application for benefits based on those conditions.

My husband had renal failure with CHF complications 3 1/2 years ago. Last year he received a kidney transplant on July 26th, 2016. He's doing fairly well, but is diabetic, has neuropathy in both feet, and the post-transplant meds are making him very forgetful with abrupt mood swings. He is 53 years old and has been on SSD for 3 years. We were told that his SSD would end at 12 months after his successful transplant. He's been looking for work since January without success. No one is willing to take a chance on an older worker with significant health issues.

I have two questions: 1 - how does the SSD office calculate the 12 months post transplant? Will the June payment be his last, or will July count as the 12th month since the transplant was so late in the month? 2 - what are the criteria for being able to continue receiving SSD after a kidney transplant? We're having a hard time getting or finding any concrete information and are a point where we must make a plan for how we will survive going forward. Thanks!

Hi Libby,
While benefits are terminated after someone is sucessfully recovered and can return to work after 12 months, your husband's condition may make him eligible for benefits past the 12 months. You may want to contact your local SSA office regarding this as they can give you information specific to your husband's case. You can find a listing of them here:

I've been on dialysis for 2 years and been receiving ssdi for the same amount of time. At the time of diagnosis of end stage renal failure, i was also diagnosed with diabetes, cardiomyopathy, hypertension, obesity, & chronic gout, these were in my application for ssdi. If i get a transplant, would i lose my ssdi after 12 months, considering the other factors in my health?

Hi John,

I am sorry to hear that. I can't say for sure, but getting a kidney transplant could automatically qualify you for SSDI on its own. I would recommend speaking to a representative from the SSA regarding your unique situation. 1-800-772-1213.

Best,
Eric

HI Tonya,
You may qualify if you meet the criteria for SSI. You do not do so automatically.

I have been on dialysis 25 years. I have thought about transplant but being sick this longI have no career. I'm scared. Dialysis is my safe spot to make life work for me. I want to work and be great. Being on dialysis this long is there any thing I could qualify for to help me move forward and get into a work field with benefits? Would VR help any?

Hi,
I have kidney transplant surgery planned for the month of Oct'17. I am not on dialysis and currently working full time. I have medial insurance from employer and I plan to apply for short team disability. I am taking 3 months unpaid FMLA from my work. Can I apply for SSDI ? If yes how long I will get the payment?

Thanks,
Nick

Hi Nick,

You may be able to get SSDI, but there really isn't a black and white answer on when you would get your payment though.

Best of Luck,
Eric
