I want my SSDI card changed and in my possession cause the lady who has the card I just found out she is my adopted mother and the card has my name on it not hers so it should be in my possession not hers or I'm taking her to court.

Hi Daniel,
That is terrible! You'll need to do that with the SSA though--call 1-800-772-1213 to begin the process of getting that sorted.

I have been on social security disability for 18 years and also I have had a payee. I just turned 66 and no longer on disability I went into social security on Jan 13, 2018 to change my payee to myself and I took a letter from my physiatrist. I have not heard anything the case worker when I applied told me that she would have to email my doctor a form and my sister a notice that I am changing payee's Here it is Feb 19, and I have not heard a word. I called the case worker a dozen times and left messages no reply and then I went in last week and the lady could not tell me anything she said there was nothing on my file. I am worried that they are gonna asked me to pay back social security disability money since I am so well to take care of my own funds. Could that be what is taking so long they are doing an audit.

Hi Judy,
I am sorry to hear that! Unfortunately it often takes up to five months to hear back from the SSA.

Hi Nasur,

It's tough to say, because every case is different. I would go down to your local SSA office and speak with someone there.

Hi Justin,

That's a great question. The Payee should hold the card, but I would recommend calling 1-800-772-1213 and talking to the SSA to see if they can clarify.

Hi Amanda,

Normally, you have to do that at your local SSA office. Since you are in a unique situation, I would recommend calling the SSA and asking them what next steps to take. Best of luck.

I have been on ssi and disability for a few years and i have a payee. The judge said after 2 years i could apply to get it changed to me and my own account. How do i go about doing that? My payee lives in another state and im ready to take over. What are the requierments to do that. How can i accomplish the change from him to me?

Hi Bonnie, you can do that at your local SSA office. To make an appointment fill out that paperwork. You can call the SSA toll free at 1-800-772-1213.

Hi There,

You normally have to do it in person. But you may want to call that office to see if they can do it over the phone.
