Lump sum back payment

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on

I received two lump sum payments, but I have not spent all of the funds. I want to make a funeral arrangement and buy a car. How soon must I spend the lump sum payment.

Hi Rose,
Your eligibility would only be from the time you filed, and if you had re-filed, then only the time you had re-filed may be considered for back pay eligibility.

Hi Rose,
They generally send a letter with a decision on your application, if you've moved in the last few years they may not have updated your information.

Hi Ora,
Most likely, no. You could potentially use her monthly payments on those, but back pay is ONLY to be used on items for the child, such as paying for her doctor's appointments or modifying your home to make it more "disability-friendly."

Hi Kat,
Your benefits would be affected if your back pay puts you over the income and resource limits for SSI.

So if they stop my monthly ssi checks when i get my 3rd lump sum payment, why do they say that you get 9months to spend it before it effects you

Hi Kat,
They may have stopped your checks for other eligibility reasons, but it may be that you did not meet the financial eligibility limit. Those lump sums become a financial resources after nine months.

Hi Rose,
I am not sure, however you may only be eligible for back pay for from the time of your most recent application.

I am the rep payee for my 57 year old brother. I supported him by paying his phone, electric, heat, home repairs, rent, etc until he got on SSI. I have all the receipts. He agreed to reimburse me when he got approved. The back payment was received on 12/28/15, for the months of August through December. Is it ok for me to be reimbursed from the back payment? We only mly have a month until it will count as a resource and make him ineligible. There are no other necessary expenses to spend it on.
