how do I stop being representative payee?

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on

I have been my brother's re-payee(sp?) for several years and feel that he is more than capable of handling his own money. What is the process to change this arrangement?

I applied to be my sons new payee on July 18th. When will he receive his 1st check as me as the payee?

Hi Nikki, in most cases, when you change payees, your next check will be sent to your new payee. In rare cases, the process may take a bit longer, but seldomly takes more than a month to change your payee.

Hi Mark,
You may want to contact the SSA with this information, as they may help you with becoming your own payee if possible.

My great aunt was my great uncles payee for 15 years and She passed away on June 5 2016. After her death my uncle received notification his benefits were suspended until a another rep payee was appointed.Concerned of his well being I went to SSA local office with him and applied to be his rep. After two long months of no benefits today I receive a check in the mail. I no longer want to be his payee and we no longer even have contact with each other. What do I do with the benefits I received?

Hi Matt, I would contact the SSA and let them know that you wish to no longer be your great uncle's payee, they can advise you as to what you need to do with the check.

Hi Timothy,
I'm not sure, but your daughter may not be eligible for benefits based off of your work record or income and resources.

I'm sorry to hear about that! You can contact the SSA at 1-800-772-1213 and they can reassign a payee.

My daughter is her husband's payee for his SSI. Due to abuse she wants to stop being his payee and leave him. How would she do that?

Hi There,
I'm sorry to hear about that!
She can do that by contacting the SSI and informing them that she no longer wishes to be his payee.

DSS is my sons guardian at the moment. He has been back in my home since July 29th how can I change his payee to me? His worker told me to just go file an application yet, I have been reading a lot of different things like having a letter from court stating he is in my custody?

Hi Renee,
Generally the SSA will assign a representative payee for someone who needs one, regardless of custody. It may be a good idea to contact the SSA to find out their exact criteria, and it also may be a good idea to find someone that you trust who would be able and willing to be a payee as well, in case there is any trouble assigning yourself as the payee.

Hi DG,
You may want to contact the SSA by phone, they can best advise you how to have another payee assigned for your friend.

Hi Patricia,
it may be a good idea to contact the SSA with the information about what is going on, they may not reassign a payee who is using the beneficiary's monthly benefits correctly.

Hi there,
You may want to contact the housing authority in your state, they may have programs available for your brother depending on his condition.
